Hey everyone! I finally made the jump and picked up a Sony FX3 for my freelance videography business, and while I’m absolutely loving the image quality, I’m hitting a bit of a wall when it comes to rigging it out. I’ve been shooting handheld for the last few projects, but adding a monitor, a wireless lav receiver, and a V-mount battery is becoming a logistical nightmare without a proper cage.
The biggest challenge for me right now is the Sony XLR top handle. I really want to keep using it because it’s so convenient for audio, but I’ve noticed that some cages either don’t fit with it attached or they make it really awkward to access the top buttons. I’m looking for a setup that offers a lot of NATO rail options and maybe some ARRI locating points for a side handle. I’ve been eyeing the SmallRig 'Black Mamba' series and the Tilta V2 kits, but I’m worried about the build quality and whether they might block the tally lights or the media slot doors.
Also, cable management is a huge concern for me. I’ve already had one close call where I almost snapped my HDMI port because the cable was hanging loose during a fast-paced shoot. Does anyone have experience with cages that have really solid built-in cable clamps that actually stay tight? My budget is roughly $350 for the cage and a good side handle, but I’m willing to stretch it if the quality is significantly better. I primarily do documentary and event work, so I need something that feels 'locked in' and doesn't rattle when I’m moving fast.
For those of you who have been using the FX3 for a while, which cage and handle combo has given you the best balance between protection and accessibility? Do you recommend sticking with a full cage, or is a half-cage enough if I’m mostly using the XLR handle? Any specific brands or modular parts I should look into to keep the rig lightweight but functional?
sooo i actually wasted a bunch of money on a 'premium' setup that ended up blocking the tally light, which was honestly so frustrating during a wedding shoot. I mean, it literally cost a fortune and still felt flimsy. Unfortunately, I’ve had issues with clamps that just don't stay tight once you start moving fast, which is a total nightmare for doc work.
If ur trying to stay under that $350 limit and still want something that feels locked in, here is what I recommend looking at:
* Nitze Sony FX3 / FX30 Camera Cage T-S03A - This runs about $75. It's basically a tank and leaves plenty of room for the XLR handle buttons without being bulky.
* Nitze HDMI Cable Clamp for Sony FX3 Cage PE23 - It's only like $20 and actually grips the cable way better than the 'high-end' ones i've used before.
* SmallRig NATO Side Handle 2427 - Around $85. It’s simple, but it works and doesn't rattle.
It’s kinda annoying that we have to piece these together, but buying individual components from brands like Nitze usually gives u way better value than the overpriced pre-made kits. gl! 👍

Honestly, I’ve had issues with cheaper cages rattling after a few months, which is just the worst during doc shoots. I’d skip the basic kits and grab the Tilta Sony FX3/FX30 V2 Full Camera Cage. It’s actually designed to clear the XLR handle properly without blocking buttons. Plus, their HDMI clamp is legit—I almost snapped a port on a fast-paced wedding shoot once, so I don't trust anything else now. It’s way more 'locked in' than the Black Mamba tbh. 👍

Looking at how the thread has evolved, it seems like the consensus is that clearing the XLR handle and securing that fragile HDMI port are the top priorities. Most people here are leaning toward the Tilta V2 or the standard SmallRig builds for their reliability in the field, which makes sense for doc work. Ive been running the FX3 since it launched and ngl, after two years of heavy use, you really start to notice which rigs develop play in the screws. If you want something that feels like a single solid piece of metal and stays locked in, here is my long-term pro setup recommendation:
Sooo I totally feel u on the XLR handle struggle. It's basically essential for audio but such a pain to rig around. For ur situation, I'm actually really happy with my current setup. I use the SmallRig Camera Cage for Sony FX30 / FX3 4183 and it fits the handle with ZERO issues. It doesnt block the tally lights or the card door which was a huge relief for me tbh.
For cable management, that cage comes with a dedicated HDMI clamp that's honestly rock solid. I havent had a single cable slip since I started using it. I also added the SmallRig Extension Rig for Sony FX3 XLR Handle MD3490 because it gives u way more mounting points on top of the handle itself for monitors and stuff... basically essential if ur running a wireless lav receiver. For the side handle, I'd look at the SmallRig NATO Side Handle with Start/Stop Remote Control 3326. It feels really locked in and is perfect for fast-paced event work. Whole setup should stay right around ur $350 budget too. gl!
Just saw this thread and wanted to jump in since you mentioned the XLR handle... that thing is a beast to work around safely without bumping your settings. > Do you recommend sticking with a full cage, or is a half-cage enough if I’m mostly using the XLR handle? Honestly, before you drop the cash, are you planning on adding a lot more heavy stuff later like a follow focus or a matte box??? If youre just doing doc work, you might want to consider if you actually need a full cage or if you can just DIY a baseplate and rail system instead. I usually prefer a full cage for the extra protection, but it adds weight fast and can be a bit overkill for a small handheld setup. If you really want that locked in feel and want to avoid the rattle, you should probably just look at anything from Kondor Blue or maybe Wooden Camera. You basically cant go wrong with either of those brands for professional work. They feel much more solid than the entry-level kits and the mounting points are usually better machined so they wont strip out over time. One thing though... have you checked how much clearance you actually have for the top buttons when youre moving quickly??? Some of these designs look cool in photos but are a total nightmare in the field if you have bigger hands. Are you looking for a NATO rail on both sides or just the left???
