Finally pulled the trigger on the a9 III because that global shutter is a game changer. Ive been shooting Sony for a decade but this 120fps burst is honestly tripping me up when it comes to glass choice. My logic was to just grab the 70-200 GM II but then I started thinking maybe I need more reach for the surfing competition Im shooting in Maui next month. Budget is around 6k but I dont want to buy something that cant keep up with the insane AF speed of this body. Would the 300mm f2.8 be better or should I stick with a zoom? Kinda worried about missing shots if the AF motors arent fast enough for the new sensor tech...

@Reply #1 - good point! Honestly, shooting surf from the beach is a different beast entirely. I tried taking my Sony FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS to a high-speed track event recently with the a9 III and was pretty bummed. Even though it is a pro lens, it just felt sluggish trying to keep up with that 120fps burst. It missed focus on way too many frames when things got real fast, which is frustrating when you have spent so much on the body. It sucks that even with a 6k budget you still have to compromise on reach vs speed. If you really want to utilize that global shutter properly without the focus hunting I dealt with, consider these:
- Sony FE 300mm f/2.8 GM OSS
- This is the real winner. Pair it with a Sony 2.0x Teleconverter SEL20TC for Maui. It is the only way to get that insane AF tracking speed at 120fps while staying relatively portable.
- Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS
- A lot of people love this for the reach, but honestly, the AF motors are not as snappy as the newer GM primes and you might feel it lagging. I was really disappointed that my older glass couldnt handle the new sensor tech... felt like I was driving a Ferrari with budget tires. Maui is gonna be killer tho, just dont stick with that 70-200. Youll be cropping so much that you will lose all that lovely detail. Reach out if you need help dialing in the AF settings for the water!

In my experience, the a9 III is a total beast but very picky about glass if you want that full 120fps burst. Over the years, I have seen people buy glass that actually bottlenecks the body AF. Since you are hitting Maui, 200mm is just gonna be way too short for most breaks...
- The Sony FE 300mm f/2.8 GM OSS is the sweet spot for your budget. It was designed for this sensor and keeps up with the global shutter perfectly.
- To save some cash, look for a Sony 2.0x Teleconverter SEL20TC. This gets you to 600mm for far-out sets without needing a $13k lens.
- For a budget-focused alternative, the Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS is an incredible value, tho the aperture is slower for dawn sessions.
- Just a heads up, older lenses wont hit the 120fps mark regardless of the body, so verify that before buying anything used. I have tried many setups, but the 300mm prime is likely your best bet for speed.
