I just got this crazy expensive camera the a9 III because my brother said it's the best for sports but now I realize I have no lens for it and my kids soccer game is this Saturday!! I'm totally lost looking at all these numbers and letters like f2.8 and 70-200 and have no idea what they mean or which one fits. I have maybe $3000 left to spend but could go a bit higher if it really makes a difference.
What do I actually need to get so I don't mess this up? I'm in a huge rush...
You definitely want the Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II. Honestly, its the standard for soccer and way lighter than the older version, which is good for your back. Since you have that a9 III, this lens is one of the few that actually keeps up with the crazy autofocus speed. It handles stadium lights perfectly fine and fits right in your budget.
Unfortunately, the 70-200 reach is not as good as expected for big fields. Like someone mentioned, it's light, but check Sony Alpha Blog; maybe consider the Sony FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS too.
