I’m stoked for the PS5 Pro launch, but since it’s missing a disc drive and vertical stand, I’m trying to budget for the essentials. Does anyone have recommendations for a compatible M.2 SSD or a solid 4K/120Hz monitor to really push those graphics? What specific accessories are you guys prioritizing for your setup?

yo, honestly i'm stoked for the Pro too but seriously, selling it without the disc drive is kinda a bummer. basically, the PS5 Pro's beefier GPU needs fast storage to avoid bottlenecks, and you need a monitor that actually supports HDMI 2.1 or youre gonna waste all that extra power. in my experience, if you dont get the right specs, you'll literally see stuttering in high-fidelity modes. Here's what I recommend based on my own setup: 1. **Storage:** I actually had issues with slower Gen4 drives in the past—they just arent as good as expected for heavy loading. I'd go with the Western Digital WD_BLACK SN850X 2TB NVMe SSD with Heatsink. It hits those 7,300 MB/s speeds easily and fits perfectly.
2. **Display:** To realy push those 4K/120Hz graphics, the LG 27GR93U-B 27-inch UltraGear 4K UHD Gaming Monitor is a solid bet. It has the HDMI 2.1 ports you need for VRR. I use an older version and it's great, tho the contrast could be better... but for the price, it's hard to beat.
3. **The "Sony Tax":** Unfortunately, you gotta buy the PlayStation 5 Disc Drive for PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro separately if you have physical games. I also grabbed the PlayStation 5 Vertical Stand cuz I dont trust it sitting horizontally in my cabinet. gl with the build! it's gonna be expensive but lowkey worth it for those frames... peace

Check out RTINGS for monitor reviews—it's basically the gold standard for finding budget-friendly HDMI 2.1 panels. Honestly, I'm SO hyped for the Pro! Since people already suggested some SSDs, look at the SK Hynix Platinum P41 2TB NVMe SSD for amazing performance at a lower price. * Pro tip: Skip the official stand and use the plastic feet in the box to save cash!
* Look at the ASUS TUF Gaming VG28UQL1A 28-inch 4K 144Hz Monitor for solid value. gl!

So, the Pro's thermal overhead is actually pretty interesting compared to the base model. But before I weigh in on the best route for your setup, I need to know a bit more about your DIY comfort level. Like, do you prefer a professional, out-of-the-box solution, or are you okay with a bit of self-service to basically get the best performance? * Are you planning to install your own third-party heatsink on the drive, or do you need a pre-attached one?
* What kind of airflow are we looking at—is the console going in a closed cabinet or out in the open? Honestly, if you're down for some manual tinkering, you can usually squeeze out better thermals for less money. Well actually, it just depends on how much you value your time versus the cost. Let us know!

Finally someone says it. Ive been thinking this for a while but wasnt sure.

> I’m trying to budget for the essentials. In my experience, Samsung 990 Pro 2TB NVMe SSD offers better IOPS than Crucial T500 2TB NVMe SSD. Tbh, LG UltraGear 27GR95QE-B OLED beats Gigabyte M28U's IPS contrast.

I totally agree with what DouglasFek said at the start, honestly its ridiculous that we are even having this conversation. It drives me crazy how Sony is treating a premium flagship like some budget kit where you gotta buy every single piece separately. Ngl, as someone who has owned every generation since the original, this shift toward stripping essential hardware is such a scam. Like, if you look at the technical overhead and the actual bill of materials, there is no valid engineering reason to omit a disc drive or a basic stand on a seven hundred dollar machine. They are basically just offloading the manufacturing costs onto the consumer while keeping the margins high. It makes the long-term cost of ownership insane because by the time you actually get the thing functional for a physical library, youre looking at almost a grand. It is just blatant corporate greed and it feels like they dont care about the legacy players at all. Companies used to pride themselves on the out of the box experience, but now its all about how many extra SKUs they can force you to add to your cart. Its exhausting tbh.

So, looking at the market trends right now, it's pretty interesting how different brands are positioning themselves for the Pro launch. Like, everyone goes for the big names, but if you really look at the specs, Seagate FireCuda 530 2TB NVMe SSD is basically the top-tier choice if you care about sustained write speeds. From what I’ve seen in benchmarks, it handles long sessions way better than some cheaper Gen4 drives that tend to throttle once they get hot. Tbh, idk if most people will notice the difference, but for a Pro console, you might as well go all out. But if you’re looking at monitors, the market is kind of a mess with all the fake HDR ratings. I’ve been researching the Sony INZONE M9 27-inch 4K 144Hz Monitor lately and honestly, the integration with the PS5's Auto HDR Tone Mapping is a huge plus. It’s Sony’s own brand, so the synergy is basically guaranteed. Well actually, you pay a bit of a premium for the brand name, but the Full Array Local Dimming is a game changer for those dark scenes in horror games. I mean, compare that to some of the entry-level IPS panels and the difference is night and day. Just something to think about before you drop a ton of cash!

To add to the point above, people have covered some solid ground here, but I think we are missing a few high-performance alternatives that really round out a high-end setup. Saw this thread earlier and wanted to jump in now that I have a minute. Over the years, I have tested dozens of drives, and for the Pro, you really want something with a massive heatsink that actually fits. In my experience, the Corsair MP600 Pro LPX 2TB PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe M.2 SSD is a fantastic alternative to the ones mentioned because it was specifically engineered for the PS5 clearance levels. It maintains high sequential reads without thermal throttling even after hours of downloading and playing heavy titles. On the display side, if you are really trying to push the Pro's new GPU, I'd suggest looking at the Sony INZONE M9 27-inch 4K HDR 144Hz Gaming Monitor. I've tried many panels, and the Full Array Local Dimming on this one handles HDR much better than the typical edge-lit monitors. It makes the lighting in games look way more natural. Also, dont forget about the actual input. If you are going all out on the console, the Sony DualSense Edge Wireless Controller is basically a necessity for the back buttons and trigger stops. It feels like a waste to have all that power and still use the basic controller honestly.
