I need a travel tripod that actually works for the Sony RX100 because I am leaving for Iceland in literally four days and I just realized my current setup is a total disaster for this camera. Ive been shooting for over ten years and I usually use a full sized carbon fiber Benro for my A7RIII but I decided to go light this time and just take the RX100 VII for some casual street and landscape stuff. The problem is that every travel tripod I try is either way too heavy and defeats the purpose of a point and shoot or its so cheap and flimsy that the Icelandic wind is gonna knock it over the second I let go.
I tried using one of those GorillaPods but I hate them honestly, they never stay level and the legs start to droop after five minutes of long exposure work. Then I tried a small Manfrotto Pixi but it doesnt give me enough height for when I want to get above a railing or some tall grass. Im looking for something with a decent ball head that is Arca-Swiss compatible because I have a small L-bracket on the Sony so I dont have to keep unscrewing things to get to the battery.
I have narrowed it down to a few things but I am stuck:
Does anyone know a specific model that hits that sweet spot of being ultra-light but still stable enough for a 30 second exposure? My budget is somewhere around 150 maybe 200 dollars if its really worth it but I need it to fit in a standard backpack side pocket. I looked at the Peak Design one but man that price tag is steep for a backup camera and I heard the legs can be a bit fiddly in the sand and grit. Is there something from Sirui or maybe Leofoto that you guys swear by for these tiny RX series cameras? I really need to get this ordered by tonight so it gets here before my flight...
@Reply #1 - good point! Honestly, the wind in Iceland will turn a flimsy tripod into a sail. Ive tried many setups over the years for my point-and-shoots and the key is finding something with thick enough legs despite the small size. You should look at the Sirui T-025SK Carbon Fiber Tripod with B-00K Ball Head. Its small enough to disappear in a bag but way more stable than any GorillaPod. The carbon fiber dampens vibrations better than aluminum, which helps for those 30 second shots. If you need something even more rugged and dont mind being lower to the ground, the Leofoto LS-223C Ranger Series Carbon Fiber Desktop Tripod is basically indestructible. It uses an Arca-Swiss system so itll fit your L-bracket perfectly. Just remember to hang your backpack on the center hook to weigh it down when the gusts pick up... it makes a massive difference.
TL;DR: Stay away from those cheap unbranded tripods! They look okay but the joints literally snap in the freezing wind. I learned this the hard way when a gust shattered my budget gear like a toothpick! It was tragic. Honestly, I love using the RX100 for landscapes but you definitely need something that handles grit well... Iceland sand is basically sandpaper for cheap leg locks so dont buy a knockoff tho! It will totally ruin your trip!
