Leaving for Tokyo next Friday and I finally picked up a used RX100 VII for the trip but the battery life is absolutely trash. I knew it was gonna be bad but I didnt realize it would die after like 40 minutes of shooting street video. I've been looking at those Wasabi Power kits on Amazon because theyre cheap and come with a dual charger but then I read a few forum posts saying they swell up after a few months and can get stuck in the camera. Then I saw the Newmowa ones are popular too but some people say they dont hold a charge as long as the official Sony NP-BX1.
I am really worried about my camera getting damaged by a cheap battery but I really cant justify spending 50 bucks for a single Sony brand battery when I probably need like 3 or 4 of them for a full day of walking around. I've got maybe 60 bucks left in my gear budget after buying the camera so I'm in a bit of a spot. Does anyone have a specific brand they actually trust for the RX100 series? Also are there any dual chargers that actually use USB-C because everything I see online looks like it uses that old slow micro-usb cable...
Look, id be careful with the super cheap stuff... the BM Premium NP-BX1 Battery and Charger Kit is a decent middle ground for your budget, but capacity is lower than OEM. Alternatively, consider the Nitecore USN2 Dual Slot USB Travel Charger. Its pricier but way safer cuz it monitors battery health, unlike generic chargers that just dump power and cause that swelling you're worried about.
In my experience, you should skip the bottom-tier brands and grab the SmallRig NP-BX1 Camera Battery and Charger Kit. Over the years, I've tried many and this one is actually reliable.
Jumping in here because I went through this exact same panic before a trip to Kyoto a few years back. Honestly, the RX100 is such a beast on power that I quickly realized I needed a solid system rather than just extra batteries. I started with those dirt-cheap packs everyone buys. At first, they seemed fine. But about three weeks into heavy use, I noticed one was getting tight in the battery door. I actually had to use a small piece of tape as a pull-tab to get it out because the casing had started to expand just a tiny bit. It wasnt enough to explode or anything, but it definitely felt like I was risking my five-hundred-dollar camera to save twenty bucks. After that, I got really picky about searching for specific technical specs. I looked for cells that actually matched the Sony NP-BX1 Rechargeable Battery voltage exactly because some of the knockoffs fluctuate, which messes with the cameras internal battery meter. For the charger, I found that looking for a dedicated USB-C input was a game changer. The old ones used those flimsy micro ports that would break if you looked at them wrong. My current setup involves a compact dual charger that I can plug into my laptop brick or a power bank in my bag while I am walking between shrines. It makes the limited capacity much easier to manage when you can top off two cells at once via a fast cable. I dont really trust the ultra-cheap bundles anymore. TL;DR: Cheap cells often swell after high-heat video use. Focus on finding a charger with a real USB-C port to simplify your travel kit.
