So I finally decided to start this hobby I have been thinking about forever which is collecting old Nintendo games from when I was a kid. I really want to find a copy of Paper Mario The Thousand-Year Door for my nephew because his birthday is coming up on the 22nd of next month and he keeps talking about it. I have been refreshing eBay like every ten minutes for three days straight now and I am so confused because one minute a copy is like 60 dollars and then the next one I see is 150 dollars?? I dont really understand why they change so much or if the cheap ones are fake or what. I actually tried to bid on one yesterday but the price jumped by like thirty dollars in the last two seconds and I just sat there staring at my screen like what just happened.

I have a budget of around 80 bucks maybe 90 if I skip a few lunches this week but I am really scared of overpaying and then seeing it cheaper the next day. I am totally new to this whole auction thing and I honestly feel like a bit of a dummy looking at all these listings. Is there like a website or an app or something that just tells you if a price is good? Like a little robot that watches the page for me so I dont have to keep staring at my phone at work because my boss is already giving me the side eye for being on my phone too much lol. I tried googling it but it showed me a bunch of stuff for Amazon and I dont think that works for eBay auctions?

I heard someone mention something about price trackers in a video once but I have no idea where to even start looking for one or if they even work for eBay since everything is usually just one item at a time and not like a store where they have a thousand of the same thing. Sorry if this is a really basic question but I am just super excited to get this for him and I dont want to mess it up and waste my money. Do I need to download something special or is there a secret setting on the site I'm missing? How do you guys actually keep track of what the real price is supposed to be?

Try this eBay Price tracker:

To add to the point above: you might want to consider the Sold items filter on eBay for data accuracy. Its a safer way to verify market value. I would also suggest using CheckaFlip eBay Price Research Tool to see recent averages quickly. Always check if listings are for the disc only or include the manual, as that impacts price. Watch for fakes tho.

Tracking prices for retro games can be a total minefield if you arent careful. You're seeing those wild price jumps because of sniping where pros wait until the literal last second to bid. Its super annoying, but I would suggest using Gixen eBay Sniper Service to automate your max bid so you dont have to hover over your phone at work. To figure out the actual market value, you should follow this methodology:

  • Use the eBay Sold Items filter. On the search results page, scroll down the left sidebar until you see the Sold checkbox. This is the only way to see what people are actually paying, not just what sellers are asking for.
  • Reference PriceCharting Video Game Price Guide specifically for Nintendo Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door GameCube. It shows a graph of the price history over the last few years so you can see if the market is spiking.
  • Be extremely cautious about Reproduction or Repro labels. If a listing is 30 dollars while everything else is 90, its almost certainly a fake copy. Make sure you check if the listing says CIB, which means Complete In Box. If it includes the original manual and case, it is worth much more. Since you have an 80 dollar budget, you might want to look for a loose disc only listing and buy a cheaper replacement case later. Just make sure to check the sellers feedback score before committing any money...

I've overpaid way too often, so definitely be careful with auctions... Just go with Mercari, you really cant go wrong there. Its less risky and I can help you look too!
