I'm looking to purchase a used FX30 camera, but I'm not sure where the best place is to find a reliable one online. I know there are a lot of options out there between eBay, Amazon, B&H, Adorama, KEH, and various other camera gear sites.

Does anyone have experience buying a used FX30 online? I want to make sure I get one in good condition from a reputable seller. I'm okay with some cosmetic wear but everything needs to be fully functional.

For a reliable used Sony FX30, consider buying from KEH or B&H Photo used store. Both offer thorough inspections and detailed descriptions of the condition, ensuring fully functional cameras even if there’s some cosmetic wear. KEH is particularly known for its stringent grading system and return policies. Alternatively, MPB is another reputable site that specializes in used camera gear, providing a good balance of quality and price. eBay can be hit or miss, so ensure the seller has high ratings and offers returns.

  • I actually went through a private trade on a dedicated cinematography gear board for my current setup. I'm quite satisfied with the outcome even though it took a bit more technical due diligence than a retail site. My main focus was on the internal runtime. Since the Sony FX30 lacks a mechanical shutter, the hour meter in the menu is the only real metric for wear. The one I got had very low hours, which made me feel better about the longevity of the cooling fan and internal components. I also requested sensor maps to ensure there were no dead pixels from laser damage or overheating during long takes. It has been about a year of heavy use now and everything works well. No complaints about the reliability so far. If you go the forum route, just make sure to ask for the specific system data files before you send any money. It really pays off to be methodical.

I'll have to disagree slightly with the retail shop route if you're really trying to maximize your budget. Shops like B&H or KEH are great, but you're definitely paying a premium for that middleman service. If you're looking for the best value, specialized enthusiast forums like Fred Miranda often have better deals on a Sony FX30 Digital Cinema Camera from owners who actually baby their gear. A few tips for getting the most for your money:

  • Prioritize listings that include the Sony XLR Handle Unit. Buying it separately later is a huge expense that people often overlook.
  • Look for bundles with media like the Sony 160GB CFexpress Type A Tough Memory Card. These cards are pricey, and getting one included saves you a lot of cash right away.
  • See if they're throwing in a SmallRig Cage for Sony FX30. Most used units from pros will have them, and they rarely add much to the resale price. Usually, you'll get a better deal and a clearer history of the camera's usage by talking to the owner directly.

I would suggest looking at Facebook Marketplace or local buy/sell groups on Facebook. I've scored some amazing deals on used FX30s that way. People often just want the gear gone fast and are willing to give a better price, especially if you can do a local pickup to save on shipping. Worth a look in addition to the usual online gear outlets.

I've had great experiences buying used camera gear from MPB.com. They thoroughly inspect all their items and grade them accurately. They also offer a 7-day return policy, which gives you peace of mind. I'd definitely check there for a used FX3

Amazon renewed items are also good choice.
