Hey everyone! I recently picked up the Sony ZV-E10 for my travel vlogs, and while I absolutely love the image quality and autofocus, I’m finding the body a bit too small to grip comfortably during long shoots. My hand starts to cramp after a while, especially when I’m using a slightly heavier lens like the Sigma 16mm f/1.4.
I’m looking for a cage or a side grip that helps with ergonomics without turning this tiny camera into a massive cinema rig. I’ve been browsing options from SmallRig and Ulanzi, but I have a few specific concerns. First, it’s really important that the cage doesn't obstruct the articulating screen—I need that full range of motion for vlogging. Second, I’d love something with a built-in Arca-Swiss plate on the bottom for quick tripod mounting, and it absolutely must allow for easy access to the battery and SD card door.
I’m torn between getting a full cage for the extra mounting points (for a mic and a small LED) or just a simple baseplate grip to keep things minimalist. For those of you who use the ZV-E10, which compact cages or grips have you found to be the most functional and comfortable? Do you prefer a full wrap-around cage or just a bottom extension?
I went through this last year. The ZV-E10 is designed for portability, but a heavy lens ruins the balance. You need something to extend the grip without blocking the screen. I found the SmallRig Cage with Silicone Handle for Sony ZV-E10 3538B for about $40. It’s a great budget fix with a built-in Arca-Swiss plate and easy battery access—honestly couldn't be happier with it!
Ok so late to the party but honestly, I've gone through like four different setups with this cam. It's crazy how Sony made it so powerful but basically forgot that humans have actual hands... lol. Seriously, the ZV-E10 is a nightmare for ergonomics once you slap something heavy like the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary for Sony E on there. I spent way too much money figuring this out over the last couple of years. Unfortunately, a lot of the "top rated" options actually ruin the vlogging experience because they block the screen rotation or make the tally light invisible. Here is what I learned from my mistakes: - SmallRig Cage for Sony ZV-E10 3531: I bought this first thinking I needed all those mounting points. Big mistake. It turned the "compact" camera into a literal brick. Plus, reaching the top buttons was annoying. If you aren't mounting a monitor and a massive shotgun mic, it's honestly overkill.
- SmallRig L-Bracket for Sony ZV-E10 3527: This was better for the Arca-Swiss stuff, but it didn't really help with the "pinky dangle" issue. My hand still cramped after an hour of shooting travel b-roll cuz it's just too thin.
- SmallRig Extension Plate for Sony ZV-E10 3523: This is lowkey the sweet spot I eventually settled on. It's just a bottom plate that adds maybe 15mm of height. It has the Arca plate built-in and, most importantly, doesn't touch the screen hinge AT ALL.
- Ulanzi Falcam F22 Quick Release Camera Cage for Sony ZV-E10: I tried this too, and while the build is amazing, the ecosystem is proprietary and expensive... not as good as I expected for a simple travel rig. I eventually realized a full cage is usually a trap for vlogging. You want that full screen range. Just get a bottom extension with a built-in grip. It keeps the weight down but gives ur pinky a place to live... gl! 👍
So, I spent way too much time doing market research on this when the ZV-E10 first launched because I’m a total nerd for CNC tolerances and build quality lol. Basically, if you’re worried about the screen, you’ve gotta look at how the cage wraps around the left side. Honestly, while SmallRig is the go-to, I actually found that the [[Tilta Full Camera Cage for Sony ZV-E10]] offers a slightly more "integrated" feel if you use their ecosystem. It’s got a built-in NATO rail on the top which is super clutch for adding a handle quickly without screwing things in every time. If you want to go the ultra-budget route without losing quality, the [[Neewer Camera Cage for Sony ZV-E10]] is basically a spec-for-spec match for the top brands but usually hits a lower price point during sales. Both have the Arca-Swiss base you're looking for and don't block the battery. Just watch out for the cheaper "no-name" half-cages—they save weight but sometimes the balance feels off when that Sigma 16mm is pulling the center of gravity forward. Tbh, a full cage actually protects the plastic body of the ZV-E10 better if you're doing rough travel vlogs!!!
Seconded!
oh man, i totally feel u on the zv-e10 being tiny!! honestly, i think a simple baseplate grip is basically what ur looking for. iirc, there's a really popular one from smallrig that adds just enough height for ur pinky to rest on without being bulky... it definitely has the arca plate built-in and wont block the screen or battery door! i've used something similar for years and it's literally AMAZING for travel!!
I love the energy here but I have to politely disagree with going the full cage route for travel vlogging! It is just too many pieces that can rattle or come loose when you are on the move. I am all about reliability and safety first. For a solid DIY-style setup that feels amazing and won't block that screen at all, try this combo:
