Hey everyone! I just picked up the Sony FX30 for some solo run-and-gun documentary work, and I'm looking to build out a solid kit. I’m a bit torn on gimbals because I usually keep the XLR top handle attached, and I'm worried about clearance and balance issues on smaller rigs like the DJI RS3 Mini. For audio, I need a reliable shotgun mic that fits the Sony handle's mount perfectly without being too front-heavy. I’ve got about $900 to spend on both pieces. Does anyone have a specific gimbal and mic combo they swear by for the FX30’s unique build?

I’m a bit torn on gimbals because I usually keep the XLR top handle attached, and I'm worried about clearance and balance issues on smaller rigs like the DJI RS3 Mini. Yo! I remember when I first tried rigging my FX30 with that chunky XLR handle. I thought I could get away with a small gimbal, but man, the clearance was a total mess and I spent hours trying to get it to tilt without hitting the back motor... sooo frustrating. Tbh, you basically need extra room. For your setup, I'd suggest the DJI RS 3 over the mini. It has much better arm clearance for that top handle, and the auto-locking axes are literally a lifesaver for solo doc work. For the mic, the Sony ECM-VG1 Electret Condenser Shotgun Microphone fits the handle's mount like a glove. I've tried many combos, but that mic is super lightweight and wont make you front-heavy. Over the years, I've learned that if ur rig is even slightly off-balance, the motors will just struggle. GL with the shoot!!

sooo for that fx30 handle, clearance is everything. here are your best bets: * DJI RS 3: definitely better vertical clearance than the mini. its basically rock solid but a bit pricier.
* Zhiyun Weebill 3S: cheaper option that handles the height well too. pair either with the Audio-Technica+AT875R&linkCode=osi&tag=5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Audio-Technica AT875R mic. its really short so it wont hit the gimbal arm. honestly i think? you can get both under $900 easy. gl!

Been crunching the numbers on your build for a few hours and honestly the math on the Feiyu SCORP 2 3-Axis Gimbal Stabilizer is unbeatable for the price! Its got that underslung grip built-in which makes low-angle doc shots so much easier than adding extra hardware. Here is what I would do to stay under that $900 cap while keeping the FX30 top handle:

  • Feiyu SCORP 2 3-Axis Gimbal Stabilizer
  • The motor torque on this is nuts. It handles the weird center of gravity from the XLR handle way better than most smaller rigs. Plus the integrated AI tracker is actually useful for solo work.
  • Deity S-Mic 2S
  • This is a short-shotgun beast! Its only about 5.8 inches long so it wont poke into your gimbal motors when you tilt. The interference tube design is amazing for rejecting background noise in messy doc environments. Love the moisture resistance for field work too.
  • Sony ECM-XM1 Shotgun Microphone
  • If you want the official look, find one of these. Its super light and fits the holder like a glove without needing any weird spacers. I love this setup because the Deity mic has a crazy low self-noise spec that really lets the FX30 preamps shine! You can really push the gain without hearing that nasty floor hiss.

> I’m a bit torn on gimbals because I usually keep the XLR top handle attached Honestly, I am kinda disappointed that everyone just defaults to DJI like it is the only brand that exists. I have had some real issues with the RS series balance points when using the FX30 top handle... it just never feels truly locked in to me. Building on the earlier suggestion about vertical clearance, you might want to look at the Moza AirCross 3 Professional Kit. It actually handles the height of that handle better than the RS3 in my experience, and it is way cheaper so you wont blow your whole budget on just the rig. For the mic, unfortunately most people suggest stuff that is way too long for a gimbal setup. The NTG5 is nice but it is a nightmare for balance if you arent careful. I finally settled on the Sony ECM-XM1. It is super compact and fits the Sony handle mount like a glove without needing those stupid rubber spacers or extra adapters. Tbh it is a much cleaner setup for documentary work where you need to move fast and keep the profile low.

Coming back to this after seeing the other suggestions. If youre serious about documentary work, you need to prioritize motor torque and vertical clearance. The FX30 with the top handle is a tall beast, and you dont want to be fighting the gimbal motors all day because of a bad center of gravity. I really think you should look at this setup:

  • DJI RS 4
  • Rode NTG5 The RS 4 is the way to go because the vertical clearance is specifically designed for mirrorless rigs with top handles. Its got the power to handle the high center of gravity without vibrating, and those auto-locking axes are a lifesaver when youre moving between locations quickly. For the mic, the Rode NTG5 is incredibly lightweight, which is exactly what you want when your rig is already top-heavy. Its a short shotgun, so it wont hit the gimbal arm when you tilt, and the sound quality is a massive step up from entry-level gear. Just a heads up, you might need a tiny rubber spacer to get a snug fit in the Sony handle mount since that mic is a bit slim, but its totally worth it for the weight savings. This combo is super reliable and stays right around your $900 budget.

I am going to have to respectfully disagree with the idea of sticking to the standard RS3 for this specific setup. If youre keeping that XLR handle on for documentary work, youre basically fighting physics. Even if it balances initially, those smaller motors are working OVERTIME to compensate for the top-heavy center of gravity. For long-term reliability and safety, I really recommend looking for a deal on the DJI RS 3 Pro. The extended carbon fiber arms give you that crucial extra vertical clearance so you arent constantly bumping the roll axis during tilt moves. Regarding the audio, you want something that fits the Sony shock mount perfectly without needing rubber bands or spacers. I swear by the Sony ECM-XM1. It is basically designed for these handles, so the weight distribution is spot on and it wont hit the gimbal frame. For solo doc work, you need gear that just works without fiddling. A few reliability tips for the FX30:

  • Always balance the gimbal with the screen flipped out if thats your usual shooting style.
  • Check motor temps after an hour to ensure the handle height isnt overstressing the rig.
  • Use a high-quality short XLR cable to prevent snags.
