Honestly I am so overwhelmed looking at all these FX30 cage options it’s actually driving me crazy. I spent like three hours last night looking at the SmallRig Black Mamba vs the standard half cage and then I saw the Tilta one that has the cooling fan thing built in and now I just don't know what to do. I have a documentary shoot coming up in like three weeks in New Orleans so it's gonna be hot and humid as hell and I need something that won't overheat but also lets me keep using the Sony XLR handle because I need those audio inputs for my interviews. I read that some cages make it impossible to reach the buttons or they block the battery door which is a total dealbreaker for me.

Requirements:

  • budget is around $250-300 max for the whole rig setup
  • must work with the original Sony top handle/XLR unit without wobbling
  • need mounting points for a monitor and a side handle for stability
  • lightweight because I'm gonna be walking all day

Every review I find on YouTube just says everything is the best because they're probably sponsored anyway. Does anyone actually have real world experience with a setup that doesnt fall apart after two days? The Kondor Blue stuff looks nice but is it worth the extra cash or am I just paying for the color...

Super satisfied with the Nitze T-S03A Sony FX30 Camera Cage lately. It's half the price of Tilta and my XLR handle didnt wobble once during a 12-hour shoot last week. Totally solid.

TL;DR: Falcam F22 system is the most secure and fastest for docs. @Reply #2 - good point! Nitze is okay but I love the Falcam F22 Quick Release Camera Cage for Sony FX30 for tough shoots. It is amazing! The quick-release ecosystem is so reliable because it locks everything into place with zero play. The XLR handle fit is fantastic too. Definitely add the Falcam F22 Quick Release Side Handle for stability while walking NOLA!

Honestly, I've tried a ton of these and if you're hitting New Orleans, you want something reliable that doesn't add crazy bulk. The FX30 has its own fan anyway so that Tilta thing is overkill and just more weight. In my experience, the standard SmallRig setup is the sweet spot for documentaries because it actually lets you access the battery and buttons without a struggle. Heres what I recommend for a solid, no-wobble rig:
