Got an FX30 for a wedding in Seattle next week and I'm panicking. I saw the SmallRig cage is cheap but heard Tilta is better, though some say their handle blocks the top buttons. I only have $150 left.

What are the best cages and handles that actually work without blocking stuff?...

In my experience after shooting dozens of weddings with the FX series, you really cant beat the SmallRig Cage for Sony FX30 / FX3 4183. Ive tried many setups and while Tilta looks sleek, the Tilta Full Camera Cage for Sony FX3/FX30 V2 Black can be a bit more finicky with button access if you have larger hands. SmallRig just gets the ergonomics right without overthinking it. Since you are on a budget, dont overspend. Get the SmallRig and pair it with the SmallRig NATO Top Handle with Record Start/Stop 3322. That setup is solid, leaves plenty of room for your fingers to hit the record button, and keeps you under budget. Tilta handles look cool but sometimes sit too low which makes top dials hard to reach in a rush. NATO rails are the way to go for fast packing... trust me.

To add to the point above: after shooting weddings for a while, you really learn that reliability is everything, especially when you're on a tight deadline in a place like Seattle where things can get chaotic. I have seen so many guys try to save a few bucks on no-name rigs only to have a handle wiggle loose mid-ceremony. Honestly, if you are worried about blocking the top buttons on your FX30, I would just stick with a cage from Kondor Blue Sony FX30 Rigging. They build their stuff like tanks and usually leave plenty of room for your fingers to actually reach the controls without feeling cramped. When looking for a rig on a budget, keep these things in mind:

  • Side mounting points for cable management
  • Weight balance when a handle is actually attached
  • Ease of access to the battery door In my experience, you should just get a standard cage from Nitze Sony FX30 Cage. They are surprisingly solid for the price and dont get in the way of the record button or the top dials. Over the years, I've tried many different setups and the simplest ones are almost always the ones that dont fail you. You dont want to be fiddling with a hex key while the couple is doing their vows. Just keep it simple and focus on the glass... thats where the money really is anyway. Good luck in Seattle, hope the rain stays away.
