I finally pulled the trigger on the a6700 for my three-week trip to Japan next month and while I am so hyped about the autofocus and the video quality honestly I am getting so frustrated with the actual logistics of carrying this thing around. Like the ergonomics are just... not there yet for me. I’m currently using the kit strap and it is literally sawing my neck off after only like an hour of walking around the neighborhood testing it out and the worst part is the battery situation. Everyone said the FZ100 batteries last forever but I went through a whole one just messing with settings and taking a few bursts of my dog in the backyard. Is it just me? Am I doing something wrong?

I have this massive mess of cables in my backpack right now because I dont have a dedicated charger and charging through the body feels so slow and sketchy when I’m on the move. Plus I’m terrified of losing these tiny SD cards since I dont have a proper case for them yet. I’ve got about 400 bucks left in my budget before I fly out to Tokyo and I really need to get this kit organized so I’m not fumbling around and missing shots of the shrines because my hands are cramped or my bag is a disaster zone. I really want to love this setup because the images are stunning but the user experience is kinda driving me crazy right now.

What are the actual essential travel accessories you guys use for the a6700 specifically to keep things lean but functional? I need suggestions for:

  • a better strap that doesnt suck
  • a way to carry extra batteries that isnt just throwing them in a pocket
  • maybe a grip or something since my pinky just hangs off the bottom?
  • a solid travel bag or pouch that fits in a regular backpack

Also do I need a v90 card or am I just overthinking the speed thing for travel stuff?

Japan is gonna be incredible with that a6700! I totally feel your pain on the ergonomics though... I spent my first week in Osaka fumbling with my kit until I finally optimized things. It is such a powerful little beast but yeah, it needs some love to make it comfortable for all-day walking. Here are the things that saved my hands and my sanity:

  • Since your pinky is hanging off, check out the SmallRig 4336 Bottom Mount Plate for Sony Alpha 6700. It is way slimmer than a full cage but gives you that extra half-inch of grip that makes a world of difference for your hand fatigue.
  • For the battery mess, I switched to the SmallRig NP-FZ100 USB-C Rechargeable Camera Battery 4087. These are amazing because they have a USB-C port right on the battery itself! You can charge them with your phone brick or a power bank in your bag without needing a bulky external charger fumbling around.
  • If neck straps are killing you, try the SmallRig Camera Wrist Strap 3848. I found that in crowded places like Tokyo, having it on my wrist was way more secure and way less sweaty than a neck strap sawing into me.
  • To keep your bag from being a disaster, the Peak Design Tech Pouch is a beast. It has origami-style pockets that fit everything from tiny SD cards to batteries and cables perfectly. Dont stress about V90 cards for travel! A Sony SF-E Series UHS-II SDXC Memory Card V60 128GB is plenty fast for almost all 4K video and saves you a ton of money for more sushi. Seriously, the speed difference is barely noticeable for travel stuff!

> I’m currently using the kit strap and it is literally sawing my neck off after only like an hour of walking around Man, those kit straps are basically sandpaper. I’ve had issues with them since the NEX days and unfortunately Sony still hasnt figured out that we dont want a billboard digging into our skin. Honestly, its the first thing I toss every single time. You gotta get the Peak Design Slide Lite Camera Strap SLL-BK-3. It’s smooth enough that it wont chafe and the quick-connect anchors are a lifesaver when you want to ditch the strap for a gimbal or tripod. For the ergonomics, yeah, the pinky thing is super annoying. I found that the body is just slightly too short for a secure grip, which makes my hand cramp after a few hours of shooting. I picked up the SmallRig Baseplate for Sony A6700 4338 and it fixes the height issue perfectly without the bulk of a full cage... tho it does add a tiny bit of weight. Regarding the batteries, stop charging in-camera. It is slow and kinda sketchy, just like you said. Grab a Sony BC-QZ1 Battery Charger so you can juice up at the hotel while you sleep. Also, dont bother with V90 cards for a Japan trip. They’re way too expensive and honestly not as good as expected for the price since they run so hot. You’ll barely notice the difference unless you’re shooting 4K 120fps all day. A Sony Tough-M Series V60 UHS-II 128GB is plenty fast. Stick those in a SmallRig Memory Card Case 2832 and throw the whole kit in a Peak Design Camera Cube Small to keep it organized in your pack. Japan involves a ton of walking, so keeping it lean but comfy is key.
