Essential gimbal recommendations for Sony FX30 videographers?

Hey everyone! I’ve recently made the switch to the Sony FX30, and while the in-body image stabilization is decent for quick B-roll, I’m finding that I really need a dedicated gimbal to get those buttery-smooth cinematic pans and tracking shots my clients are looking for.

I’m currently rocking a SmallRig cage and usually have the Sony XLR top handle attached for audio, which adds a bit of bulk and height to the rig. My main lens is the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8, but I’m considering moving to a heavier wide-angle zoom soon. I’ve been looking at the DJI RS3 series and some of the newer Zhiyun Crane options, but I’m honestly torn. I love the idea of the RS3 Mini for its portability during long wedding days, but I’m worried the motors might struggle once I add a monitor or a heavier lens. On the other hand, the RS3 Pro feels like overkill for an APS-C setup.

I do a lot of run-and-gun event coverage, so quick balancing and reliable battery life are huge priorities for me. For those of you using the FX30 as your daily driver, which gimbal have you found to be the most 'essential' and well-balanced for this specific body and top-handle combo?

sooo i literally just went through this exact same dilemma with my fx30. i totally get why you're looking at the DJI RS 3 Mini, but tbh, once you slap that Sony XLR-H1 XLR Handle Unit on there with a cage, the center of gravity gets super wonky. i tried pushing the mini to its limits but the motors started vibrating like crazy once i added a monitor and a heavier lens like the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary for Sony E.

For your situation, i actually think the standard DJI RS 3 Gimbal Stabilizer is the perfect middle ground. It's not as heavy as the DJI RS 3 Pro, but it has enough physical clearance for the height of the FX30 with the top handle and SmallRig Camera Cage for Sony FX30. The big selling point for me was the automated axis locks—actually a lifesaver when ur moving between locations at a wedding. Basically, you just hit the power button and it unfolds itself, which is huge for run-and-gun.

Also, if you're worried about future-proofing for a heavier lens, maybe check out the DJI RS 4 Gimbal Stabilizer. It's got the new motor algorithms and better vertical clearance which helps with that top-heavy xlr handle. The battery life is seriously solid on both, easily lasting a full day. I guess the RS3 Pro is lowkey overkill unless you plan on moving to a full-frame FX6 or something later... but for now, the standard RS3 is the way to go! gl with the shoot! 👍

I went through this—the DJI RS 3 Mini is portable but risky, while the DJI RS 3 offers safer motor headroom for that top handle setup, ngl.

• Warning: Top handles kill ur vertical balance by raising the center of gravity.
• Tip: Use counterweights on any DJI or Zhiyun... its cheaper than buying a heavy-duty rig and works well!

Would love to know this too

yo! i just spent like three days straight researching this because i am terrified of my gear falling over lol. honestly if youre worried about reliability and that top handle weight, you gotta skip the mini and go for the DJI RS 3 Pro Gimbal Stabilizer!! i know it feels like a lot for an aps-c but the peace of mind is so worth it. those motors are super strong and wont struggle at all when you add a monitor later. i also checked out some deep dive videos on the zhiyun stuff and the Zhiyun Crane 4 Gimbal is actually incredible too. it has these little color-coded balance lights that make it so much easier to get it right. i found a really good setup guide on the zhiyun website that explains the physics of the taller fx30 rigs. dont risk your expensive fx30 on weak motors, go for the pro or the crane 4!! its better to be safe and have that extra power than to have a motor freak out mid-shoot!!
