So I finally pulled the trigger on the Sony FX30 for my wedding gigs here in Chicago but honestly rigging this thing out is giving me a headache. I spent all night looking at cages and everyone keeps mentioning the SmallRig half cage vs the full cage. I like how the SmallRig looks but I saw a couple reviews saying the screws come loose after a few weeks of heavy use which scares me since Im moving around a lot during a ceremony. Then theres Tilta and their stuff looks more solid but I heard the top handle is a bit of a nightmare to get off quickly if I want to throw it on my RS3 Pro gimbal.
Ive got about $350 maybe $400 tops to spend on the cage and handles before my first big shoot next month and I really need to get this sorted. Here is what Im looking for:
Should I just stick with the basic SmallRig kit or is there some mid-range brand Im missing that actually holds up to some abuse? I dont want to buy twice. Im kinda leaning towards the Tilta but that gray color is kinda ugly lol...
Unfortunately, the standard SmallRig Full Cage for Sony FX30 isnt as solid as expected. I had issues with screws backing out, which is disappointing for professional use. If you're on a budget, get the SmallRig HawkLock Quick Release Cage Kit because it uses a better NATO rail spec for faster swaps. Skip the heavy Tilta gear. Grab a SmallRig NATO Side Handle even though the ergonomics are just okay.
^ This. Also, I have found that spending more doesn't always solve the headache. Unfortunately, I have had issues with the Tilta ecosystem because their mounting plates are just not as good as expected for quick swaps to an RS3 Pro. Their proprietary ecosystem ends up being a trap for wedding shooters who need speed. Since your wrists are hurting, you really need to prioritize a NATO-based workflow. It is the only way to keep the weight down while staying modular. I would look at these instead:
I've spent years rigging Sony bodies and the 8Sinn Sony FX3/FX30 Cage is the gold standard for weight, tbh. It is CNC machined, so tolerances are tighter than cheap cast cages. For handles, the Kondor Blue NATO Side Handle is great for 10-hour shifts. I use their Kondor Blue Pro Top Handle because it slides off the NATO rail instantly when you need the Sony XLR unit.
