[Solved] Best Sony Camera for beginners?

I'm hoping to get some advice from more experienced Sony shooters on the best camera for a total beginner like me. I'm excited to get into photography more seriously, mostly shooting family, travel, and outdoor activities to start. As this will be my first non-phone camera, ease of use is pretty important while still getting decent quality.

After some initial research, two Sony mirrorless models stand out: the a6100 and a6400. On paper, both seem to hit a nice sweet spot for beginners - approachable controls, solid performance, lots of lens options. However, I still have some questions for those who have used them:

- How much more demanding is the a6400 to learn compared to the a6100? I like the idea of room to grow into more advanced features, but don't want to bite off more than I can chew out of the gate.

- For my uses (portraits, landscapes, general lifestyle photos), would I see a big image quality difference between them?

- How good is the autofocus on both? Missing focus was always an issue I had on phones.

- Between the two, which has better battery life? Extra batteries add up fast.

- Any other notable differences that would push a beginner towards one over the other?

I don't have a hard budget cap, but getting the best value is important. That said, I'm willing to spend more if the a6400 would be significantly better as a "grow into" camera. I eventually want to progress into flash photography, RAW processing, and more. Love to hear any insights or personal recommendations! Thanks in advance for the help.

If you're a beginner looking to dive into the world of photography or videography with a Sony camera, here are some great options to consider:

Sony a6400 (Best Sony APS-C Camera for Beginners)

  • Reliable, fast autofocus
  • Weather-sealed body
  • High-quality 14-bit RAW files
  • Tilt-able 3-inch touchscreen

One downside is the lack of in-body image stabilization, so make sure to use it with one of Sony's image-stabilized lenses.

  • Intuitive layout and user-friendly design
  • Excellent build quality
  • Live streaming capabilities
  • Vari-angle flip-screen for easy vlogging
  • Unlimited 4K video recording with no overheating issues

Sony A7C II (Best Sony Full-Frame Camera for Beginners)

Despite being a full-frame mirrorless camera, the Sony A7C II is designed to be accessible to beginners. It features:

  • Intuitive button layout and easy-to-navigate menu system
  • Lightweight and compact body
  • World-beating autofocus system with various tracking modes
  • Tilting 3-inch LCD touchscreen
  • In-body image stabilization
  • 4K video without any crop

Sony FX30 (Best Sony Cinema Camera for Beginners)

The Sony FX30 is a powerful gateway camera for beginners looking to enter the world of film and videography. It offers:

  • Simple and intuitive layout
  • Pro-level features like in-built cinematic color profiles
  • 10-bit color 4K at up to 60fps with no crop
  • Super-slo-mo at 240fps in Full HD
  • Built-in ND filter for easy exposure control

Sony a7III (Best Sony Camera for Serious Beginners)

For those looking to dive deep into photography, the Sony A7III provides a solid foundation to grow as a photographer. It includes:

  • 24-megapixel full-frame sensor and BIONZ X processor

@andrew_steven Is Sony a6400 is a bit old in 2024 ?

Andrew_Steven Andrew_Steven 06/06/2024 8:31 am

@89004 Despite its 2019 release, the a6400 remains a very capable camera in 2024. It still delivers excellent 24MP image quality and video, with oversampled 4K and 1080p 120fps capture. The fast, accurate autofocus also stays competitive thanks to industry-leading Sony AF technology like real-time eye AF. As part of Sony's extensive E-mount system, the a6400 enjoys versatile native lens options too. While newer APS-C cameras add incremental upgrades, the core performance and features of the value-priced a6400 keep it relevant for many photographers. Unless you must have the latest auto focus or fastest burst shooting, the a6400 still produces great results after 5 years for both photos and videos.

Why not get Sony ZV-E10, it has better video features than a6100/a6400.

@beatcannon But ZV-E10 is only designed for video, not recommended for taking photos.

Both the a6100 and a6400 are great beginner cameras. The a6100 controls and menu may feel slightly easier to learn, but the a6400 gives you more room to grow with advanced features. For family, travel and outdoor shots, image quality is nearly identical. Autofocus is excellent on both, easily handling action like kids and pets. The a6400 does edge out the a6100 in battery life. Given your interest in progressing into flash, RAW, etc, I'd recommend the a6400 as a worthwhile step up with more controls and customizability. However, you can't go wrong with either - pick based on budget and ease of use.

Sony ZV-E10 don't have EVF, and mainly for Vloggers.

If you go full frame, the best choice is get the Sony a7 III or a7 II. (Depends on your budget)

@stamoch Seems a7 II has already discontinued.

Pinebaby 30/05/2024 8:33 am

You can still get used or refurbished a7 II for a lower price.

In nowadays, more and more people are shooting videos with cameras. So I also recommend the ZV-E10 or wait for upcoming ZV-E10 II.

It depends on your budget.

As someone who started with the a6100 and later upgraded to the a6400, I think either would be a great choice for a beginner. The main differences are:

  • The a6400 has a slightly more robust build quality and weather sealing
  • The a6400 has a higher resolution EVF (2.36M vs 1.44M dots)
  • The a6400 can shoot 4K video at 30fps vs 24fps on the a6100
  • The a6400 has a few more advanced features like S&Q mode for slow-mo

For your uses, I don't think you'd see a huge image quality difference. The autofocus is excellent on both. Battery life is similar - I'd recommend getting a spare either way.

Personally, I'd lean towards the a6400 if budget allows. The better EVF and weather sealing are nice to have, and it gives you more room to grow. But the a6100 is still a very capable camera that could serve you well for years.
