so im heading to Japan next month and I really need to figure out my video setup for the a6700. Ive been looking at the DJI RS 3 Mini because everyone says its the gold standard for small setups but then I saw the Zhiyun Crane M3S which looks way more portable for my tiny Peak Design sling. my logic was that smaller is better so I actually carry it around Tokyo but then I read some stuff about Zhiyun having weird connection issues with the newer Sony bodies like mine and now Im just stuck. My budget is around 350 bucks and I really dont want something that takes ten minutes to balance every time I change a lens... what are you guys using for travel?

In my experience, reliability is the priority when traveling. Ive tried many setups over the years and the DJI RS 3 Mini 3-Axis Lightweight Gimbal is more dependable for the a6700 than the Zhiyun Crane M3S Compact Camera Gimbal.

  • DJI software is rock solid
  • Zhiyun feels better in a bag but the connection issues are real I would personally stick with DJI for peace of mind, tbh.

Just catching up here. Might want to consider the Feiyu SCORP Mini 2 3-Axis Gimbal. Be careful with the app, but that built-in AI sensor is actually smart for solo travel. Another choice is the Hohem iSteady MT2 Kit Camera Gimbal.

  • MT2 handles a 1.2kg payload easily
  • SCORP grip is better for low angles Make sure to watch your total weight... small motors can overheat if you dont balance it perfectly.

Jumping in here because i actually disagree a bit with the smaller is always better logic for travel. i used to be obsessed with shaving every gram off my kit but honestly i found that the super tiny gimbals often have such tight tolerances that they become a total pain to balance if you aren't using a tiny prime lens. my current setup taught me a few things after a month in southeast asia:

  • motor torque headroom is everything. if you're close to the limit, your battery dies way faster because the motors are working overtime to keep things steady.
  • those quick release plates that actually stay on the camera are life savers. i wasted so much time with cheaper setups where i had to keep re-tightening things with a coin or tool.
  • look at the folding mechanics. some small gimbals are awkward shapes that dont actually fit well in my Peak Design Everyday Sling 6L because they're bulky in the wrong places. im very happy with moving up to a slightly larger frame size for my Sony Alpha a6700. it adds maybe 200g but the peace of mind knowing the motors wont freak out when i move is worth it. plus, i can usually get two full days of shooting without hitting a charger. just make sure whatever you grab has those physical locking switches for each axis. it makes the whole experience so much less stressful when you're jumping on and off trains in tokyo... seriously, those locks are a godsend. if you need more info on the motor specs just ask, always happy to chat tech.
