I just picked up the ZV-E10 II because I wanted a smaller setup for travel but I ended up liking the sensor way more than I expected for stills. Ive been shooting with the kit lens and an old vintage 50mm on an adapter but the sharpness just isnt there for what I need. I'm doing a graduation shoot for my cousin in two weeks at a botanical garden here in Florida and I really need that tack sharp look on the eyes. Since its an APS-C sensor I know I have to deal with the 1.5x crop factor so I'm debating between a 56mm or maybe even going up to an 85mm if the AF can keep up with the new phase detect system.
I have about $800 to spend and I dont mind if its Sigma or Sony native as long as the eye tracking works perfectly because she moves around a lot when she laughs. I looked at the Sigma 56mm f1.4 which everyone raves about for E-mount but then I saw some people saying the Sony 85mm f1.8 is actually better even on a crop body because of the extra compression you get. Is that 85mm gonna be too tight for outdoor portraits on this specific body though? I'm worried about having to stand like 30 feet away just to get a full body or even a torso shot. What do you guys think is the absolute sharpest glass I can get for this mount that wont hunt for focus?
In my experience with the Sony crop system, you really cant beat the Sigma 56mm f1.4 DC DN Contemporary for pure sharpness. I have shot tons of portraits with it over the years and it still blows me away how it resolves detail on the eye. While the Sony FE 85mm f1.8 is legendary, it feels way too long on the ZV-E10 II. Youll basically be standing in another zip code just to get a full body shot in those gardens. Stick with the Sigma. It fits your $800 budget and the AF is lightning fast. Honestly, it is the sharpest glass available for E-mount APS-C right now. The eye tracking is incredibly sticky so itll keep up even when she is moving and laughing. TL;DR: Grab the Sigma 56mm f1.4 DC DN Contemporary. It is sharper and much more practical for outdoor shoots than an 85mm.
Watch out for that 127.5mm equivalent on the Sony FE 85mm f/1.8. its gonna be too tight. I suggest the Sigma 65mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary... technical MTF data is insane for eye-tracking accuracy.
