What's the best budget portrait lens for the Sony a6700 that actually feels like a major step up from the kit glass? I've been shooting with Sony for about four years now, mostly doing street stuff with my trusty old a6000, but I finally bit the bullet and upgraded to the a6700 last month and the autofocus is just insane compared to what I'm used to. The problem is my old lenses are starting to show their age on the new 26mp sensor and look a bit soft.

I have a wedding for my cousin coming up in late October in Seattle and they asked me to take some nice portraits of the family during the rehearsal dinner. I'm strictly looking for something under $400 because the camera body already drained my savings lol. I've been looking at a few options:

  • Sigma 56mm f1.4 (everyone seems to love this one)
  • Viltrox 75mm f1.2 (looks massive but the bokeh is tempting)
  • Sony 50mm f1.8 (the cheap one, is it even worth it anymore?)

Is the 75mm gonna be way too tight for indoor stuff? I usually stick to the 35mm focal length for general use so jumping up that high feels a bit daunting but I want that compressed look for the headshots. Just need something that can keep up with the real-time eye tracking without hunting too much...

Honestly, I’ve been super happy with the Sigma 56mm f1.4 DC DN Contemporary Sony E and it’s easily the safest pick. The autofocus is just rock solid, which is vital when you’re relying on that a6700 eye-tracking during a busy dinner. It’s sharp enough for the 26mp sensor and the size is perfect. The 75mm is likely way too tight for indoor family shots... you'd be backing into walls constantly.
