I have this shoot coming up next Saturday for my cousins engagement party here in Chicago and I desperately need a solid portrait lens for my a6400. My budget is super tight, trying to stay under $300 if possible because I spent way too much on travel lately.

Ive done some digging and everyone points to the Sigma 56mm f1.4 as the absolute holy grail for Sony crop sensors. It looks amazing but it is stretching my budget a bit too much, even if I try to find a used one. The other option I keep seeing is the Sony 50mm f1.8 which is way cheaper and fits my budget perfectly. But then I read a bunch of posts saying the autofocus on that Sony 50mm is super slow and hunts constantly, especially in low light which is a huge deal since the party is indoors at night. I dont want to miss shots because the lens is hunting.

I need to order something by Tuesday to get it in time. Is the autofocus on the cheap Sony really that bad on the a6400, or should I just suck it up and stretch my budget for the Sigma? Or is there another budget option I completely missed?

Building on the earlier suggestion, I have to politely disagree about jumping straight to cheap third-party lenses like Viltrox. Unfortunately, I had issues with autofocus tracking reliability on non-native glass during fast events, and they just arent as good as expected when you need absolute certainty. If you want to play it safe and stay under budget:

  • Look for a used Sony FE 50mm f1.8 but make sure the firmware is updated to version 3.0, which helps the hunting issue.
  • Rent the Sigma 56mm f1.4 DC DN Contemporary for the weekend. It only costs about thirty bucks to rent, which saves your budget. Honestly, rushing a purchase right now is kinda risky.

> Or is there another budget option I completely missed? Just catching up on this thread. I was in a super similar spot last year shooting a friends indoor retirement party on a tight budget. I ended up buying a used Sony E 50mm f1.8 OSS and honestly, I have been extremely satisfied with it. People always confuse this crop-sensor version with the full-frame FE 50mm, which indeed has terribly slow autofocus. But the APS-C version works well and I had no complaints tracking people on the dance floor. Plus, the optical stabilization in the lens is a lifesaver since the a6400 lacks in-body stabilization. It let me shoot at slower shutter speeds to keep the noise down when the lights dimmed. Definitely worth considering to save some cash.

I really hate to say it, but that cheap Sony glass is super disappointing. Unfortunately, the autofocus motor tech is basically prehistoric and just wont keep up at a party. I had issues with it missing focus constantly in low light.

  • Stick with Sigma primes
  • Look into the Viltrox lineup
  • Avoid older first-party stuff Honestly, go with Sigma and you cant go wrong. Their optics are way cleaner anyway.
