So Ive been trying to find a decent deal on this old Canon AE-1 camera because I really want to get into film photography this summer but honestly the prices on eBay are all over the place. One day its like eighty bucks and then the next day the same thing is listed for two hundred and Im just super confused how people actually know if theyre getting a good deal or not. I have a strict budget of about 150 dollars for the whole setup including a lens so I really need to get the timing right or I wont be able to afford it.

I tried looking for those price tracker things people talk about online but every single one I click on asks me to make an account or sign in with my Google or Facebook before it even lets me see the price history chart. Im really not trying to get more spam in my inbox or have another site tracking my every move just to look at a simple graph you know? Sorry if this is a really basic thing to ask but I am totally new to this whole eBay thing and computers arent really my strong suit. Is there any site or tool out there where I can just paste a link or type in an item and it shows me the past prices without making me register for anything? I just want to stay anonymous and not have to deal with passwords for something I might only use once...

Honestly, I totally get the frustration with those account walls. Ive been using CheckAFlip for a while now and I am super satisfied with it. You just type in the item name and it pulls up the recent sold prices alongside current listings without asking for a single login. It works well if you just need a quick reality check on what people actually paid.

  • CheckAFlip: Shows averages and recent sales instantly.
  • PriceBefore: Good for seeing long-term price trends without an account. Managed to snag my last gear setup way under budget using these tools. No complaints about spam or tracking because there is no signup process. Just make sure you also check the Sold Items filter directly on eBay by scrolling down the left sidebar. Its the most accurate data for a Canon AE-1 right now.

Its honestly a bit of a letdown how many of these price tracking tools have gone downhill lately. Ive spent years tracking vintage glass and most free trackers now are just cluttered with ads or have really laggy data. Even PriceBefore, which is usually my recommendation for anonymous searches, has been acting up lately and missing some of the newer listings. Its not as reliable as it used to be, which makes it harder for beginners to get a straight answer on what a Canon AE-1 is actually worth. The reason these sites are still better than nothing is that they aggregate data over months, but they unfortunately often miss the nuance of Best Offer sales. You might see a camera sold for 200 but the seller actually took 140, and the tracker wont show you that secret price. Just stay persistent tho. That 150 budget is definitely doable for a good kit but youre gonna have to be quick when a real one pops up because the market is just so flooded with overpriced listings right now. Youll get there, just takes a bit of patience and constant checking.

You gotta check out PriceBefore! Its honestly amazing for quick searches without any annoying login stuff. I love it! Just a huge heads up tho: definitely watch out for "parts only" listings when youre looking at those history graphs. People see a cheap AE-1 and think its a total steal, but usually the shutter is dead or the glass has fungus. Dont let those fake "lows" mess up your budget!

To add to the point above: you dont actually need a separate website for this if you just want the raw data. Ive been buying and selling gear for ages and honestly, the built-in eBay filters are your best friend for staying anonymous while getting the real numbers.

  • Search for the Canon AE-1
  • Look at the filters on the left side (or under the sort button on mobile)
  • Scroll down and check the Sold Items box This shows you exactly what people paid, not just what sellers are asking for. Green prices mean it sold. If you see a price with a strikethrough, it means they took a lower offer. Another solid tool is WatchCount. It doesnt require a login and lets you see the Most Watched items, which helps you gauge the actual demand. For a camera like the AE-1, demand is crazy high right now so 150 is a bit tight. If you find yourself needing to look into local apps for better deals, Smartphone Board usually has some good threads on which local marketplace apps are actually worth downloading without getting scammed. Just make sure the light seals on that Canon arent crumbling before you hand over any cash...
