im trying to get a list together for my sons birthday next month and torn between just sending the direct link or making it a public list they can search. my aunts are really bad with technology so i need the simplest way that wont let them see my other stuff... whats the easiest way to share it so they dont get lost?

Regarding what #1 said about avoiding the public search option... yeah, i totally agree. I tried that for my daughters graduation and it was a complete mess. My relatives kept finding an old registry from like 2018 instead because the search is so bad. Unfortunately, even the direct links can be glitchy sometimes. I had issues where my aunt clicked the link but Amazon forced her to sign in, and she forgot her password, so she just gave up. Not as good as I expected from a huge company tbh. Quick tip: if they really struggle with tech, just screenshot the list and text it. It sounds primitive but it stops them from accidentally seeing your other private lists or getting lost in the UI. Also, make sure you dont use the Manage link by mistake or they might accidentally delete stuff while trying to shop. Found a really helpful thread over on Smartphone Board that explains exactly how to do this.

> My relatives kept finding an old registry from like 2018 instead because the search is so bad. @Reply #2 - good point! Just saw this thread and wanted to chime in because I have been there. Honestly, the Amazon search is a total nightmare for specific lists. I just used the direct link method for my nephews birthday and I am so happy with how it turned out. Basically, the consensus here is spot on: avoid public search and use the direct Invite link. It works well because it sends them straight to the items without them poking around your profile.

  • Open your list
  • Click Invite
  • Select View Only
  • Copy that link One thing I noticed that really helps is checking the dont spoil the surprise setting. It keeps things organized so you dont end up with three of the same toy. It costs nothing and saves so much stress. You got this!

Direct links are the most reliable way to go if youre worried about privacy. I have had my account for over ten years and I am always kinda careful about people seeing my regular shopping habits or weird bulk buys.

  • use the invite button
  • double check privacy
  • dont use search Actually, this reminds me of when I started getting into woodworking last spring. I kept making lists of specialized saws and my father-in-law kept trying to buy them for me even tho I wanted to pick them out myself. I ended up with three different sanders I didnt even need and no space left in the shed... but yeah. If your aunts really struggle with the tech side, just tell them to go with Apple, you cant go wrong with their tablets for simplicity. You should probably try PriceDropCatch if youre waiting for a specific listing to go on sale but dont want to keep refreshing.

I would suggest avoiding the public search option since people always get lost or find the wrong profile. Be careful with permissions too so they dont mess with your items.

  • Hit Invite on your list
  • Choose View Only
  • Copy the direct link Make sure to double check that View Only setting before sending. I do this every year and it saves so much stress.

I love digging into the technical side of how these sharing protocols actually function! When you use the Invite button instead of the search bar, Amazon generates a unique hash ID in the URL. This is fantastic because it bypasses the standard search indexing which is usually a mess for private profiles. By selecting View Only, you are basically creating a read-only endpoint for their browser to hit, which prevents them from accidentally toggling your cart settings or seeing your private purchase history. It is all about managing those permission layers properly! Speaking of birthdays, I actually spent all of yesterday in the garage building a custom wooden toy chest for my nephew. I am obsessed with the grain on walnut right now and used a hand-rubbed oil finish that looks incredible. I probably spent way too long sanding it, but the tactile feel is just amazing! btw I use PriceDropCatch for my gift shopping so I can snag the hardware when prices dip. It has saved me a ton on materials. But yeah, hope the birthday party goes well!

Totally agree with everyone saying avoid the search bar... that thing is broken beyond repair lol. I've tried many different setups for my family over the years and there are a few technical hurdles that always trip people up. Personal experience: I once sent a list to my grandma and she somehow ended up on my personal recommendations instead of the birthday list... super awkward. I realized later it was because i copied the URL from my browser address bar instead of using the actual Invite button. A few things to make sure it is actually reliable:

  • Use the Invite button specifically and select view only. The browser URL has session data that often breaks for others.
  • Open the link in a private tab or incognito mode to test it first. If you can see it without being logged in, your aunts probably can too.
  • If you are worried about them overpaying, i usually run my list through an Amazon price tracker just to make sure my relatives arent getting ripped off by a sudden price spike. Every list basically works better when you simplify the handshake process like that... helps avoid the forgotten password drama Lynn mentioned earlier. Lmk if you run into any weird errors with the permission settings tho.

Like someone mentioned, the search engine indexing on Amazon is basically broken for private lists, so sticking to the direct invite link is absolutely the best move for performance! I remember when I was coordinating a massive group buy for some high-end networking gear... I spent way too much time obsessing over the URL structures to make sure the session cookies wouldnt expire on my less-techy friends. It was honestly a blast seeing the data sync up in real-time as people hit the landing page! Just to figure out the best way to bypass any login hurdles for your aunts:

  • Will they be accessing the link through the mobile app or are they strictly desktop users?
  • Are you looking for a setup that tracks which items have been purchased so you dont end up with two of the same thing? I really love optimizing these workflows so everything runs like a well-oiled machine... its just so satisfying!
