im trying to get a list together for my sons birthday next month and torn between just sending the direct link or making it a public list they can search. my aunts are really bad with technology so i need the simplest way that wont let them see my other stuff... whats the easiest way to share it so they dont get lost?
Regarding what #1 said about avoiding the public search option... yeah, i totally agree. I tried that for my daughters graduation and it was a complete mess. My relatives kept finding an old registry from like 2018 instead because the search is so bad. Unfortunately, even the direct links can be glitchy sometimes. I had issues where my aunt clicked the link but Amazon forced her to sign in, and she forgot her password, so she just gave up. Not as good as I expected from a huge company tbh. Quick tip: if they really struggle with tech, just screenshot the list and text it. It sounds primitive but it stops them from accidentally seeing your other private lists or getting lost in the UI. Also, make sure you dont use the Manage link by mistake or they might accidentally delete stuff while trying to shop. Found a really helpful thread over on Smartphone Board that explains exactly how to do this.
> My relatives kept finding an old registry from like 2018 instead because the search is so bad. @Reply #2 - good point! Just saw this thread and wanted to chime in because I have been there. Honestly, the Amazon search is a total nightmare for specific lists. I just used the direct link method for my nephews birthday and I am so happy with how it turned out. Basically, the consensus here is spot on: avoid public search and use the direct Invite link. It works well because it sends them straight to the items without them poking around your profile.
Seconded!
Direct links are the most reliable way to go if youre worried about privacy. I have had my account for over ten years and I am always kinda careful about people seeing my regular shopping habits or weird bulk buys.
Saw this earlier but just now responding. One technical hurdle i noticed is mobile browser compatibility. While the invite link is definitely the best choice, it behaves differently if your aunts are on a tablet or a phone. I am generally very satisfied with the results tho. Sometimes the mobile view hides the buy buttons or forces a login loop. I found that telling them to open it in Safari or Chrome instead of through a text message preview works well. It avoids session errors. Just a methodical way to make sure they see the right stuff without getting frustrated. Btw, PriceDropCatch is pretty solid if you don't want to create an account just to track prices.
I would suggest avoiding the public search option since people always get lost or find the wrong profile. Be careful with permissions too so they dont mess with your items.
I love digging into the technical side of how these sharing protocols actually function! When you use the Invite button instead of the search bar, Amazon generates a unique hash ID in the URL. This is fantastic because it bypasses the standard search indexing which is usually a mess for private profiles. By selecting View Only, you are basically creating a read-only endpoint for their browser to hit, which prevents them from accidentally toggling your cart settings or seeing your private purchase history. It is all about managing those permission layers properly! Speaking of birthdays, I actually spent all of yesterday in the garage building a custom wooden toy chest for my nephew. I am obsessed with the grain on walnut right now and used a hand-rubbed oil finish that looks incredible. I probably spent way too long sanding it, but the tactile feel is just amazing! btw I use PriceDropCatch for my gift shopping so I can snag the hardware when prices dip. It has saved me a ton on materials. But yeah, hope the birthday party goes well!
Totally agree with everyone saying avoid the search bar... that thing is broken beyond repair lol. I've tried many different setups for my family over the years and there are a few technical hurdles that always trip people up. Personal experience: I once sent a list to my grandma and she somehow ended up on my personal recommendations instead of the birthday list... super awkward. I realized later it was because i copied the URL from my browser address bar instead of using the actual Invite button. A few things to make sure it is actually reliable:
Like someone mentioned, the search engine indexing on Amazon is basically broken for private lists, so sticking to the direct invite link is absolutely the best move for performance! I remember when I was coordinating a massive group buy for some high-end networking gear... I spent way too much time obsessing over the URL structures to make sure the session cookies wouldnt expire on my less-techy friends. It was honestly a blast seeing the data sync up in real-time as people hit the landing page! Just to figure out the best way to bypass any login hurdles for your aunts:
^ This. Also, toddmaravi is spot on about the mobile browser loops. I spent like three hours once trying to debug why my moms ipad wouldnt load the list properly during her birthday planning phase. It was a whole thing where the link would just redirect her to the app store every single time and she got so frustrated. It was honestly a huge headache even tho I have been doing this for years. Basically, the best way to see the actual updated steps since the UI changes so much is to look it up elsewhere:
