Does anyone use spreadsheets to manage seasonal shopping lists?

Honestly I am just about done with the Notes app on my phone. Its a complete disaster area right now. Every single year I tell myself I am gonna stay organized for the holidays and every year I end up with like twenty different lists, half-written scraps of paper in my car, and random links buried in my text messages. I am trying to keep a strict $800 budget this year for everything including the big winter grocery haul and gifts but I have no idea how much I have even spent so far because nothing tracks the math for me automatically.

I live in a pretty rural part of the country so I have to do almost all my shopping online and the shipping tracking is a total nightmare to keep up with. Was it delivered? Is it still in some warehouse? Who even knows. I tried using a few different shopping list apps from the app store but they are all either too simple or they want a monthly subscription which I am NOT paying for just to make a list. Its so frustrating because I feel like I am constantly double buying stuff or forgetting that one cousin I see once a year until the very last second.

I was thinking about just moving everything over to a Google Sheet or Excel but the thought of building one from scratch makes my head hurt. I need to track the item name, the store, the price, the shipping status, and if its been wrapped yet. That last part always gets me because I hide stuff in the attic and then find it three months later in March because I forgot I even bought it. I just want one place where I can see everything at a glance without having to scroll through fifty different deleted photos of price tags.

Does anyone actually use spreadsheets for this kind of thing or am I just overcomplicating my life? If you do use one how do you even set it up so it isnt a total eyesore to look at on your phone while youre actually out in a store...

> the thought of building one from scratch makes my head hurt. ^ This. Also, I have to respectfully disagree with the idea of building your own tracker from the ground up. Honestly, in my experience working with data sets for years, starting from a blank sheet is just a massive waste of your time. You are basically trying to reinvent a wheel that has already been perfected by people who have way too much free time on their hands. Instead of stressing over formulas and formatting, just go to YouTube and search for holiday budget templates or gift tracker sheets. I remember seeing a really detailed video about this exact thing a few months back... I think it was one of those productivity channels. If you search for something like best google sheets gift tracker, it's usually one of the top results and they almost always have a link to a free copy in the description. It is way more cost-effective to spend five minutes searching than five hours debugging a broken sum formula on your phone. There are tons of experts who have already figured out the best layout for mobile screens so it doesnt look like an eyesore when you are actually in the store. Just find a solid template on Google or maybe check out some of the pre-made ones on Reddit. No point in making your head hurt even more when the work is already done.

In my experience, I spent years drowning in lists until I switched to Sheets. It's worked best for me over the years.

  • Will you use your phone mostly?
  • Need tax formulas?

> the thought of building one from scratch makes my head hurt. Building on the earlier suggestion, sheets are perfect for the math. Just a warning tho: dont use too many hidden columns or complex scripts. Theyll just lag the mobile app when youre trying to shop. Stick to basic data validation for shipping statuses so you can just tap a dropdown. Honestly, check out Share Product for some clean templates if you want to skip the setup phase.
