I've been a Prime member for ages and I'm usually pretty good at navigating the checkout flow but I ran into a snag today. A few of us are trying to buy a $500 grill for a housewarming party this weekend and I really dont want to put the whole charge on my personal card then chase everyone down for Venmos. I know you can split between a gift card and a credit card but I was looking for a way to let multiple people pay their own share directly on the same order. Is there a legit group purchase feature I'm missing or does Amazon still force one person to front the whole cost? I feel like this should be a thing by now...
> Is there a legit group purchase feature Sadly no. I'd be careful; I once fronted a couch and it was a total mess. Smartphone Board has solid tips for big hauls.
Jumping in! Fronting cash is so risky! I love group gifts but dont do it without Splitwise!
Amazon still doesnt have that feature! One time I tried buying a huge tent for a camping trip and it was so scary fronting all that cash and then waiting weeks for my cousins to pay me back.
@Reply #3 - good point! Honestly, using gift cards is the most bulletproof way to ensure the transaction doesnt get flagged for fraud or deal with bank holds. I actually tested a technical workaround last year when three of us went in on a high-spec espresso machine that cost nearly $900. If you create a Custom Registry on your account (you can just name it Housewarming), you can add the grill and then enable the group gifting toggle in the settings. The system usually lets people contribute any amount they want toward items over $200. Once the total is reached, Amazon basically converts those contributions into a specialized gift card balance you use to trigger the final purchase. Its a bit more administrative work than a simple checkbox at checkout, but it keeps the paper trail clean and ensures nobody gets stuck with the bill. Plus, it bypasses the whole chasing people down for cash thing since they pay Amazon directly. Only thing to watch out for is that third-party sellers sometimes dont allow the group gift option, so make sure the grill is shipped and sold by Amazon.com for the best reliability. I found the UI for managing the contributions is actually pretty decent tho it takes a few clicks to find.
Any updates on this?
Unfortunately, no. Amazon still doesnt have a direct feature for this. Honestly its ridiculous. I've looked at their backend integration specs and there is zero technical reason why they havent implemented multi-source payment routing by now. They just dont care. Prices for hardware like grills have gone through the roof lately, but the shopping experience is basically getting worse. It drives me crazy that we're paying more for Prime and still have to deal with the risk of fronting hundreds of dollars on a personal card. Ngl its a total scam that they put the burden of debt collection on the user instead of just building a proper checkout API. Not as good as I expected from a tech giant in 2024, but that seems to be the trend lately... quality goes down, prices go up, and basic utility features stay stagnant. I do a lot of DIY work and buy gear for group builds often, and its just a constant headache that they wont fix.
