Which compact wide-angle lens is best for Sony a7C II travel?

Hey everyone! I recently pulled the trigger and upgraded to the Sony a7C II. I absolutely love the silver finish and how incredibly light the body feels compared to my old setup, but now I’m facing a bit of a gear dilemma: finding the perfect wide-angle lens that doesn't ruin that compact form factor.

I have a big trip coming up to Japan next month, and I know I'll be doing a mix of dramatic landscape photography in Hakone and tight street shots in the neon-lit alleys of Shinjuku. The whole reason I bought the a7C II was to stay portable, so I really want to avoid those massive, heavy G-Master zooms that make the setup feel front-heavy and bulky.

I’ve been doing a lot of research, but I’m stuck between a few very different options. First, the Sony 20mm f/1.8 G seems like the gold standard for image quality and low light, but I’m worried it might be just a bit too large for a 'compact' travel kit. Then there’s the Sony 24mm f/2.8 G—I love that it’s almost a pancake lens, but I’m concerned that 24mm won't be wide enough for some of the architecture and temple shots I have planned. I’ve even looked at the Sigma 17mm f/4 I-series because it’s tiny and built like a tank, but I’m a little nervous about that f/4 aperture when the sun goes down.

I’m really looking for that 'sweet spot' where size, weight, and sharpness meet. Since I'll be walking 15-20k steps a day, every gram counts, but I don't want to regret my lens choice when I'm looking at the RAW files later.

Has anyone here used these specific lenses on the a7C II, or is there a 'hidden gem' prime or compact zoom I’m completely overlooking? What do you think is the ultimate wide-angle companion for this body when portability is the top priority?

Coming back to this, wide glass basically needs large elements to fix distortion. I tried the Sony FE 24mm f/2.8 G but was disappointed by the soft corners. Then I used the Sigma 17mm f/4 DG DN Contemporary, but unfortunately f/4 is rough for night shots. Ur basically choosing between low light and weight. Ngl, the Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G is technically superior if u can handle the extra bulk

> Honestly, I think f/4 is gonna be a struggle for those dark Shinjuku alleys... it's just not enough light. I totally agree with that. I'm still kinda new to the E-mount system, but I've heard from a few people that trying to shoot handheld at f/4 in tight alleys usually leads to a lot of missed shots or way too much noise. Since you're gonna be walking 20k steps, you also gotta think about reliability. Japan can get pretty rainy or humid depending on when you go, and I'd be worried about a lens that isn't fully sealed. I'm not 100% sure, but I think some of those ultra-compact lenses skip the weather gaskets to stay small. It would be a total nightmare if your lens started fogging up or acting glitchy halfway through your trip because of a little rain in Hakone. Maybe look into:

  • If the lens has a rubber seal around the mount
  • How the autofocus holds up in dim lighting
  • If the build feels sturdy enough for being bumped around in a travel bag Honestly, I'd feel safer with something that is known for being reliable even if it's a tiny bit heavier. Nothing ruins a trip like gear that lets you down!

Honestly, I think f/4 is gonna be a struggle for those dark Shinjuku alleys... it's just not enough light. If you want a budget 'sweet spot':
- Try the Samyang wide prime
- It's way cheaper and tiny The extra width really helps with those temples and wont break ur bank. Definitely a solid value pick imo! What bag are you using?

im honestly so happy with the a7c ii so far... it works well for basically everything. but yeah i have the exact same dilemma for my upcoming trip to japan. i need something that feels solid and wont fail me after walking 20k steps. i really want to be satisfied with the kit i bring without it being a total brick. out of curiosity, are you set on a specific budget for this lens? also, are you strictly looking for a prime or would you consider a tiny zoom if it fit the bill?
