Which compact travel lens should I buy for Sony a7C II?

I finally pulled the trigger on the a7C II after years of lugging around my chunky a7R III and I am honestly loving the form factor but man, my current lenses look and feel hilarious on this thing. I have been a full-frame shooter for ages so I know my way around the FE mount but I am hitting a wall trying to find that perfect one lens setup for a trip to Tokyo I have coming up in about three weeks.

My logic was that I would just use my 24-70 GM II but it completely defeats the purpose of having a compact body. It is front-heavy and just... not fun to carry all day. So I was thinking about maybe going the prime route? I looked at those small Sony G primes like the 40mm f2.5 and they seem great for the size but then I worry I will miss the wide end when I am walking through the city. Then I saw the new 24-50 f2.8 G which seems like a good middle ground but is it actually small enough to justify the price?

Budget is roughly $800 give or take though I could push it if something is truly life-changing. I mainly do street photography and some environmental portraits of my wife while we are out. I really want to keep the whole rig fitting in a small sling bag.

Currently debating between:

  • the 40mm f2.5 G (super tiny, love the look)
  • the 24-50mm f2.8 G (versatile but maybe still too big?)
  • maybe a Samyang or Tamron option?

Ive always been a zoom guy for travel but the a7C II makes me want to go minimal. If I go with a single prime am I gonna regret not having that 24mm reach? Or is the 40mm normal enough to cover most things? Just feels weird finally having a small camera and not knowing which glass actually respects that size... what are you guys actually using on these compact bodies?
