I just picked up the Sony a7C II, and I’m absolutely loving how portable it is. However, my current lenses are way too bulky, and I really want to lean into that 'compact' setup for street photography and travel. I’ve been looking at the Sony 40mm f/2.5 G because of its tiny footprint, but I'm also curious if the Sigma 35mm f/2 Contemporary is a better all-around choice despite the extra weight. I’m trying to keep the budget under $700 and want something sharp that doesn't feel unbalanced on such a small body. For those of you using the a7C II, which compact prime has become your go-to everyday lens?

yo, saw this earlier but just now responding! I went through this exact same headache last year with my a7C II. Honestly, it’s a tough call cuz you really want that 'small' feeling but dont wanna sacrifice quality... 1. Sony FE 40mm f/2.5 G: This was my first pick. It’s TINY. Like, literally fits in a jacket pocket. But I was actually a bit disappointed by the rendering; it felt a bit clinical and the bokeh was kinda busy in certain lighting. 2. Sigma 35mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary: I swapped to this for a month. The build is incredible (metal > plastic), but it unfortunately felt way too front-heavy. It made the small grip on the a7C II feel awkward after an hour of shooting. So basically, I went back to the Sony G glass just for the balance. It sucks that the rendering isnt as 'magical' as the Sigma, but youre wrists will thank you lmao. anyway, gl with the choice!

So basically the consensus is choosing between tiny Sony glass or metal Sigmas. After years of shooting, I had issues with the weight of the Sigma 35mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary—it wasn't as good as expected on my Sony a7C II which was disappointing. * Sony FE 40mm f/2.5 G: Best for travel.
* Sony FE 24mm f/2.8 G: Great for street. Unfortunately, that Sigma just isnt as 'compact' as I wanted, you know? lol

In my experience, ur basically choosing between Sony's tiny glass vs. the Sigma metal primes. And honestly, I've been SO happy with the official Sony ones for years. Pros: they're weightless and the balance is industry standard for compact bodies. Cons: they feel slightly less tactile than metal. Sigma has that premium build but adds weight. I'm satisfied with the Sony ones tho... TL;DR: Go with official Sony compacts, they're literally perfect for street photography.
