I just treated myself to the Sony a7C II for an upcoming trip to Tokyo next month and I am so incredibly excited to start shooting! Only problem is I have absolutely no idea what I am doing when it comes to lenses, it is all so confusing. I really need a zoom lens so I can capture different things without carrying a bunch of gear, but my budget is pretty tight after buying the camera body. I can spend maybe $500 max.

Sorry if this is a dumb question but what is the best budget zoom lens I can get for this camera that wont ruin the compact size?

I took that exact camera to Tokyo last year and loved it! Best travel setup ever. You definitely need the Sony FE 28-60mm f/4-5.6. Couple quick tips from my trip:

  • Keep it tiny so you actually carry it all day
  • Buy it used to save cash for food It is seriously amazing for street shooting!

I saved up and bought a used Tamron 20-40mm f/2.8 Di III VXD for $490. Honestly, it was the best decision ever! Compact, light, and the f/2.8 is fantastic for night street shots.

If you want a bit more versatility for Tokyo at night, you might want to look at the Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary. You will have to buy it used to hit that $500 budget, but honestly, its worth the extra effort. Just be careful when buying used though, make sure to test the zoom ring and check for dust inside the elements. I suggest this because Tokyo is incredibly dark in some of the alleyways, and an f/4 or f/5.6 lens is going to struggle heavily. The f/2.8 constant aperture gives you way more safety margin. Its slightly larger than a basic kit lens but still very compact for the a7C II. Just make sure you double check that you are buying the Sony E-mount version and not the L-mount by mistake.
