I'm torn between two options for upgrading my 24-70mm zoom lens. I've been hearing rumors that Sony is going to release a new FE 24-70mm f/2 lens sometime in next few weeks. That constant f/2 aperture would be amazing for low light situations and buttery bokeh. However, the FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II lens is already out and received amazing reviews. It's incredibly sharp, has excellent AF performance, and is weather sealed. And at f/2.8 it's still relatively bright. I'm leaning towards just getting the GM II since it's available now and looks to be an amazing lens. But that f/2 aperture is quite tempting if the rumors are true... What would you do - wait for the rumored 24-70 f/2 or just bite the bullet and get the GM II now? Let me know your thoughts!

I'm in the same dilemma! The f/2 aperture is making me hesitate on pulling the trigger for the GM II. An extra stop of light makes a big difference for low light photography and videography. However, the GM II is so good and Sony's f/2 lenses tend to be huge and heavy. Just look at the 35mm f/1.4 GM or 50mm f/1.2 GM - they are monstrous! I'd be worried that a 24-70 f/2 would be insanely large, heavy and expensive. If you can hold off for a bit, I'd say wait to see if Sony actually releases that rumored f/2 version in the next 6-12 months. If not, just go for the GM II.

BTW, the FE 24-70mm f/2 lens should be very heavy

Hey, If you want to get FE 24-70mm f/2 lens, at least you need wait another 2 months, why not get the FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II lens now.

No question, get the GM II now! I've had mine for 6 months and it's an absolute stunner. The sharpness, colors, and AF performance are just impeccable. I don't find myself missing the extra stop of light since f/2.8 is already plenty bright. Plus an f/2 24-70 would probably cost several thousand dollars. Don't get caught in the endless wait for rumored gear. The GM II is here now and it's as good as it gets for a 24-70 zoom. I'd buy it with confidence!

I think f/2.8 is enough for most Sony shooters

Still waiting ? The FE 24-70mm f/2 GM is expected to be released in Fall 2024.
