Hey everyone! I’m currently in the process of refining my kit for an upcoming photography expedition, and I’m lucky enough to be shooting with both the Sony a1 and the new a9 III. While I’ve got my wide-angle bases covered, I’m really struggling to decide on the definitive wildlife lens that can actually keep up with these powerhouses.

Since the a9 III hits that insane 120fps and the a1 demands serious resolving power for its 50MP sensor, I’m worried about picking a lens that might bottleneck the autofocus or image quality. I’ve been looking at the Sony FE 200-600mm G for its versatility, but I’ve heard mixed things about its performance in lower light compared to the big primes. On the flip side, is the 600mm f/4 GM worth the massive investment, or would the new 300mm f/2.8 GM with a 2x teleconverter be a smarter, more portable setup for hiking?

I primarily shoot birds in flight and fast-moving mammals, so tracking reliability is my top priority. For those of you using these specific bodies, which telephoto glass has consistently given you the best hit rate for fast action without sacrificing too much mobility?

For your situation, honestly stick with the Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS. It’s around $1,900 and seriously the best value!! Unless your made of money, the Sony FE 300mm f/2.8 GM OSS is just too pricey once you add the converter. Maybe find a used Sony FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS instead? It’s pretty amazing for hiking and hits high frame rates better than the G... anyway gl!

Omg I am literally going through the exact same struggle right now!! Its so stressful trying to pick the right glass when youve got bodies as insane as the Sony a1 and that new Sony a9 III. I spent the last three hours looking at my bank account and then looking at lens specs... then looking at my bank account again lol. I have a huge trip coming up soon and I am terrified of making the wrong choice and missing the shot of a lifetime because the gear let me down or was just too heavy to carry up a mountain! Honestly though, there are some amazing comparisons on YouTube that cover this exact thing. If you just search for something like Sony a9 III wildlife lens test or a1 vs a9 III telephoto autofocus you will find some killer videos that show the real-world hit rates side-by-side. I saw one video last night that was super helpful, think it was one of the first results when you search for those specific setups. Definitely check out Reddit too, some of the wildlife subs have huge threads on this already!

Seconding the recommendation above! I was out last month tracking falcons with my Sony a1 Mirrorless Camera and realized that while the Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS is awesome, it’s actually a bottleneck for the Sony a9 III Mirrorless Camera. Basically, Sony caps that lens at 15fps on the a9 III cuz the older motors just cant keep up with the 120fps readout. Its kinda a bummer if youre expecting max speed! Honestly, if you want peak tracking without compromising, the Sony FE 600mm f/4 GM OSS is the gold standard, but its SO heavy. I think the Sony FE 300mm f/2.8 GM OSS with a Sony FE 2.0x Teleconverter is a decent option, but just be careful... TCs can sometimes hunt in low light. tbh for the a1's 50MP, you really want that prime sharpness anyway. cheers!
