The Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN II lens is an updated version that introduces several enhancements and improvements. Key features include an aperture ring with an Iris lock, a custom function button, redesigned flush-mounted switches, and a 100g reduction in weight. The lens boasts faster autofocus via the new HLA system, improved weather sealing, and a shorter, slimmer, lighter design. The minimum focus distance and magnification have also been improved.

Optically, while the formula remains the same, it has been optimized with thinner aspherical elements for minor improvements, including better control of chromatic aberration and distortion patterns. However, the lens still exhibits some vignetting and distortion at certain focal lengths, with peak sharpness at f/8 and diffraction affecting quality beyond f/11.

Compared to competitors like the Sony G Master and Tamron G2, the Sigma holds its own, particularly in areas like sharpness, contrast, and bokeh quality. The lens also offers impressive flare resistance and minimal ghosting, making it suitable for high-resolution photography and portraiture.

Overall, the Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN II presents a worthy evolution with significant autofocus and feature improvements, offered at a competitive price of $1,200. Whether existing users should upgrade depends on their need for the new features and autofocus enhancements.

I've tried many standard zooms over the years and honestly, the newest Sigma is impressive, but reliability and weight distribution are where I focus now. I switched to the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 for most of my daily work because it balances so much better on the A7 series bodies. In my experience, the autofocus is just as snappy as the more expensive options but it costs way less. Another solid choice if you want to stay in the Sigma ecosystem but save some cash is the Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary. It is incredibly light. Ngl, I was worried about the build quality at first since it feels so plastic-y compared to the Art line, but it has held up fine through several rainy outdoor sessions. If you dont absolutely need the 24mm wide end, these 28mm alternatives are much more cost-effective for real-world usage.
