The Sony FE 85mm f/1.8 is an excellent choice for interviews. Great bokeh, sharp, and the focal length is perfect for a natural perspective while maintaining comfortable distance from your subject. Much more affordable than the GM version too.

^ This. Also, I totally agree with M_89s about the 85mm. I remember my first big corporate gig, I was so nervous about gear failing that I almost blew my whole budget on a GM lens I couldnt really afford. Tbh, I ended up getting the Sony FE 85mm f/1.8 instead and its been my absolute workhorse ever since. It just works every single time, no complaints. I prefer sticking to a few reliable primes because they have fewer moving parts to break during a long day of shooting. Staying satisfied with a simpler setup has saved me thousands over the years.

  • The Sony FE 85mm f/1.8 is basically a steal for how sharp it is. Its never let me down on an interview.
  • If you need a second angle, I highly recommend the Sony FE 35mm f/1.8. Its small, light, and incredibly reliable for wider shots.
  • Pro tip: Look for used copies at places like MPB or KEH. I saved a few hundred bucks on my 35mm by buying used and the quality is identical to new. Going the budget-friendly route doesnt mean you're losing out on quality, plus you get that peace of mind knowing your gear is solid.

For shooting interviews with a Sony camera, I would recommend one of the following lenses:

  1. Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II
  • Very versatile focal range covering wide to short tele
  • Fast f/2.8 constant aperture for low light and shallow depth of field
  • Extremely sharp optics
  • Built-in optical stabilization
  1. Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM
  • Ideal focal length for flattering portraits and interviews
  • Extremely fast f/1.4 aperture for creamy bokeh and subject separation
  • Razor sharp even wide open
  • Focuses quickly and accurately
  1. Sony FE 50mm f/1.8
  • Affordable option that delivers great image quality
  • Bright f/1.8 aperture performs well in low light
  • Compact and lightweight
  • Fast and silent autofocus

I use the new released FE 20-70mm f/4 G lens on my a7C II, a compact and lightweight lens. Works well.
