Does anyone know of a tripod that is actually small enough for a Sony RX100 but doesnt feel like it will snap in half the second there is a light breeze? I am honestly getting so frustrated trying to find something that fits in a regular jacket pocket because everything I find on Amazon is either a piece of cheap plastic trash or a professional setup that costs as much as my camera.
I looked at the Joby GorillaPods because everyone online raves about them, but then I read a ton of comments saying the joints get super loose after a few months and the legs end up just sagging under the weight of the camera. I also checked out some of those Manfrotto mini tripods but I cant tell if the ball head is actually stiff enough to hold the camera at an angle without slipping. Im heading to Japan in about three weeks for a solo trip and I really dont want to be lugging around a full size tripod when im trying to navigate the subways or walk around shrines all day.
My budget is around 60-80 bucks max. I really just need something sturdy enough for long exposure shots of city lights at night or maybe setting up a self-timer shot when I find a cool spot. It feels like every review I see is sponsored or just testing them with phones instead of a real point and shoot. Why is it so hard to find something in the middle ground? Does anyone have something they actually use in the field that doesnt fall over or feel like it belongs in a toy box?
> I cant tell if the ball head is actually stiff enough Honestly, the Manfrotto PIXI Mini Tripod Black is super solid. I use it with my RX100 and it never slips.
Honestly, I have been through so many of those tiny plastic tripods over the years. The issue is usually the cheap ball heads just not locking down tight enough for those long exposures.
Late to the party but I totally get the frustration. After hauling cameras around for years, I stopped trusting those bendy legs because they really do just give up on you eventually. If you want something that actually holds firm for night shots without needing a second mortgage, check out the Sirui 3T-35K Tabletop Tripod. It is built like a tank compared to those plastic things on Amazon. In my experience, the metal construction on the Sirui actually lets you lock the ball head down tight enough that it wont droop when you tighten the knob. I used it for a trip to Iceland last winter and it held my compact steady even in some pretty nasty gusts. It folds up super small, basically fits in a jacket pocket, and the legs are sturdy enough that I dont worry about my gear hitting the ground. Most people ignore the legs, but these ones have a nice locking mechanism that clicks into place so they dont spread out on their own. Just make sure you get the version with the ball head included, honestly makes a huge difference for framing those city shots. It feels like a real piece of equipment instead of a toy, which is exactly what you want when you are thousands of miles away from home.
