I’ve been using my Sony RX100 VII for a few months now, and while I love the image quality, I’m really struggling with the ergonomics. It honestly feels like a slippery bar of soap! I’m constantly worried about it sliding out of my hand during street photography sessions. I’ve looked at the official Sony AG-R2 adhesive grip, but I’ve also seen some third-party wood grips and SmallRig baseplates online. I want to improve the handling without adding so much bulk that it’s no longer pocketable. For those who have tried different setups, which grip do you find most comfortable for long-term use? Is the basic stick-on one enough, or is a larger bracket worth the extra size?
Works great for me

In my experience, you’re spot on about the "bar of soap" thing... it’s highkey terrifying when you’re shooting one-handed on a busy street lol. Honestly, if you want to keep it pocketable, don’t overthink it and just grab the basic stick-on grip. Here’s what I recommend after trying a few different setups:
- Sony AG-R2 Attachment Grip: This is basically mandatory for these cameras. It’s cheap (around $15) and adds almost zero bulk, giving your fingers just enough of a ledge to catch onto.
- SmallRig L-Shape Grip for Sony RX100 III/IV/V/VI/VII 2467: This is great if you have larger hands and need a spot for your pinky, but it realy does kill the "pocketable" vibe for most pants.
- Lensmate Sony RX100 VII Thumb Grip: This is lowkey the secret weapon. Pairing the front grip with a thumb rest makes the handling 100x more secure. I’d start with the Sony AG-R2 Attachment Grip first cuz it’s the most cost-effective fix. It works well enough for 90% of people. If that still feels flimsy, then maybe look at the larger brackets, but keep in mind they add weight you might not want for long-term use. Also, make sure you clean the camera body with alcohol before sticking the grip on... I didn't do that once and it peeled off in like a week. weirdest thing. gl!
