Which external microphones work best with Sony RX100 cameras?

So I finally picked up a Sony RX100 VII for my travel vlogs since my phone audio is trash, but now I realize the lack of a standard mic jack is a massive headache. Ive been reading everywhere that the Sony ECM-G1 is the way to go because it plugs into the hot shoe, but then I see folks on other threads swearing by cheap adapters for external lavs. My budget is like 150 bucks max because I already spent way too much on this camera. Im leaving for a trip to Japan in three weeks and just need decent audio for outdoor market walkthroughs. Does that Sony mic actually hold up in wind or should I just stick with an adapter setup?

> I have been using these cameras for years and learned pretty quick that messing with adapters is just asking for a loose connection to ruin your footage. Like someone mentioned, those adapters are a total nightmare. I tried using a generic TRS to multi-interface shoe adapter with my Rode VideoMic GO II Shotgun Microphone and the signal noise was just abysmal. Unfortunately, Sony proprietary stuff is tricky. The Sony ECM-B1M Shotgun Microphone is technically the superior digital audio choice, but it is way too bulky for the RX100 body imo. For your Japan trip, honestly, stop overthinking the mic. Since you have limited space, grab the Sony ECM-G1 Compact Shotgun Microphone. It draws power directly from the shoe so no cables dangling. It is not perfect in heavy wind, so make sure you keep the deadcat on at all times.

Re: "I have been using these cameras for years and learned pretty quick that messing with adapters is just asking for a loose connection to ruin your footage." Man, that is the truth. I learned the hard way in Kyoto a few years ago when an adapter slipped mid-recording and I lost all my audio for a day. Be careful with those cheap multi-interface shoe setups because they are fragile. Since you are heading to Japan, space is key. You might want to consider these instead:

Honestly, the RX100 VII is a killer travel cam, but the missing 3.5mm jack is definitely a pain. I have been using these cameras for years and learned pretty quick that messing with adapters is just asking for a loose connection to ruin your footage. Save yourself the headache and go with the Sony ECM-G1 Shotgun Microphone.

  • It draws power directly from the multi-interface shoe, so no annoying batteries.
  • The size is perfect for travel since it stays super compact.
  • You definitely need to grab a fuzzy windmuff though, because the included foam isn't enough for Japan's windy market areas. I honestly wouldn't bother with cheap adapters, they are way too fragile for vlog setups. Just keep it simple so you can focus on the trip instead of troubleshooting audio.

Regarding what #3 said about how the proprietary shoe stuff is such a pain, I am in the exact same boat with my setup. I spent the last hour digging through my gear bag trying to figure out why I keep accumulating these legacy adapters that barely work anymore.

  • I have a pile of cables that I swear were functional last month
  • Half of my gear is just gathering dust in the closet
  • The internal pins on these interfaces feel like they are made of glass Honestly, I spent way too long yesterday watching videos on how to repair broken soldering points on old circuit boards. It is kind of meditative once you get into the flow of it, but my eyes were killing me afterward. My workbench is a total disaster zone of capacitors and random wiring diagrams right now. Anyway, sorry, kinda went off topic there.
