Is there a good external microphone that actually works with the Sony RX100 series, or am I totally out of luck here? Sorry if this is a super basic or dumb question but Im really new to all this camera stuff. I have the RX100 Mark VA that I bought for a upcoming trip to Japan next month, and the built in mic picks up every little wind gust and handling noise. Im trying to record some street food vlogs and stuff while Im walking around Tokyo, but the audio right now is just awful. Problem is, I was looking at the camera body earlier and I literally cannot find a microphone jack anywhere on it?? Did Sony just leave it off or am I blind? How do people even attach an external mic to these things if there isnt a port, do you need some kind of special adapter or wireless setup? Im hoping to keep it under 100 bucks if possible since Im already blowing my savings on flights. What do people usually use for this specific camera for travel vlogging?

hate to break it to ya, but youre definitely not blind. sony completely left the mic jack off the rx100 series, which is super frustrating for vloggers. unfortunately theres no simple plug-and-play adapter for a standard wired mic either. tbh most people end up going the wireless route or using an off-camera recorder. i had issues with trying rigged setups in crowded places like tokyo anyway, so here is what actually works safely:

  • Sony ECM-W2BT Wireless Microphone - hooks up via the multi interface shoe on top, but check if your mark va supports digital audio through it first
  • use a deadcat wind muff right over the built-in mic as a cheap fix for Tokyo wind
  • grab a pocket recorder like the Zoom H1n Portable Recorder and sync audio later in editing stick with the deadcat first since you're on a tight budget. have an awesome trip to japan!

Jumping in here because I completely panicked over the exact same audio issue before my trip last year! Before diving into options, what kind of locations are you planning to shoot in? Are we talking super busy markets like Tsukiji or quieter side streets?

  • I learned the hard way that wind noise ruins everything instantly
  • Ended up switching my entire workflow after that mess
  • Dual system audio saved my footage completely
