Recommended SD cards for high-speed Sony compact camera photography?

Ive been shooting with my Sony RX100 VII for ages and usually, my old 64GB SanDisk cards do the trick just fine. But lately Ive been doing way more high-speed bursts for some action shots of my dogs in the yard, and the buffer is just choking constantly. It takes forever to clear and I keep missing the next sequence because the write speed is obviously hitting a wall.

So I was looking into the Sony Tough cards because the V60/V90 ratings seem legit, but man, they are pricey. I need something reliable for a trip to the coast next month and I have about 150 bucks set aside for a couple of cards. My logic was that I probably dont need the absolute fastest V90 card since it's a compact camera, but maybe V60 is the sweet spot? Has anyone actually tested these on the RX series? I dont want to waste money on over-specced cards if the camera bus speed is just gonna bottleneck anyway. Kinda worried about getting a fake on Amazon too, had that happen once before. What do you guys think? Should I just bite the bullet and grab the V90s or is that total overkill for a pocket camera...

Just catching up on this thread. Honestly, the buffer issues on the RX series are super frustrating, especially when you are just trying to capture the dogs running around. I used to think the V90 cards were the move, but they are just overpriced for the RX100 bus speed. Unfortunately, I had issues with some cheaper brands failing mid-shoot, so I stopped gambling with my memory cards after losing a whole afternoon of vacation photos. I stick with ProGrade Digital SDXC UHS-II V60 128GB now. It's been rock solid and cleared my buffer way faster than the old stuff. If you are worried about fakes, just buy from a camera shop instead of the big marketplace sites, it's not worth the risk. Definitely dont overpay for V90s, your camera just cant even use that speed.

Honestly, the RX100 VII buffer is notorious for choking. I switched to Sony SF-M Series V60 128GB cards a while back and the difference was night and day compared to those old SanDisks.

  • V60 is the sweet spot for that camera.
  • V90 is total overkill, you wont see the extra speed. Just stick to reputable retailers to avoid fakes. My experience with the V60 cards has been solid for wildlife shots.

@Reply #2 - good point! Man, I feel you on the buffer frustration. Dealing with that exact same lag with my setup while trying to track my own hyperactive pup. It is honestly the worst when the light is perfect but the write speed just kills the mood. My dog actually managed to jump straight into a muddy pond earlier today, which was a total nightmare to clean up, honestly dont even know how she gets that muddy. Anyway lol.
