honestly im so over this tiny little screen on the fx30 like seriously how are we supposed to pull focus on a 3 inch display? i just finished a short project and half my shots are slightly soft because i couldnt see what the hell was happening in the sun. i have a huge outdoor shoot in like 10 days in san diego and i need a monitor that actually works before i lose my mind. i was looking at the shinobi but i heard the build quality is kinda plastic and cheap? i need something reliable but i cant spend a fortune right now after dropping all my cash on the fx30 and some g-master glass.

requirements:

  • must be bright enough for direct sunlight (1000+ nits?)
  • 5 inch max because i use a ronin rs3 and dont want it too heavy
  • needs to support custom luts for s-log3
  • budget is around 300 to 450 max
  • good battery life or at least uses np-f style batteries

please tell me what you guys are actually using on your rigs because im about to return this camera if i cant find a way to see what im filming...

Yeah, the heat thing is real. I would also watch your power consumption since high nits basically eat batteries. You might want to consider the Osee T5+ 5.5 Inch 1000 Nits because it is very lightweight for its size. Just be careful with your RS3 setup. A heavy monitor and battery combo can strain gimbal motors if youre not perfectly balanced.

i've been shooting for years and honestly i've tried many different setups, but i still remember a beach shoot where i thought i nailed focus on the back screen... got home and half the b-roll was soft. lesson learned. for the fx30, you really need that extra brightness or you're just guessing. In my experience, there are two that fit your budget:

  • Atomos Shinobi 5-inch 1000nit Photo and Video Monitor. i've had one for years. people complain about the plastic but mine has survived plenty of drops. 1000 nits is okay, but you'll probably still want a sunhood in san diego.
  • Portkeys LH5P II 5.5-inch 2200nit Touchscreen Monitor. this is what i'm using now. its way brighter at 2200 nits and has a solid metal body. the bluetooth camera control is a lifesaver on the rs3 because you dont have to struggle with the tiny fx30 dials. both run on np-f batteries and handle luts fine. go with the portkeys if you're worried about the sun.

Had a screen melt once. Honestly, be careful with heat on these high-nit panels.
