Hey everyone. I recently made the jump to the Sony FX30 for my travel and wedding work, and while the internal stabilization is decent, I really need a dedicated gimbal for those smooth cinematic pans and tracking shots. My main issue is that I am tired of lugging around heavy gear. I used to use a full-sized Ronin, but it is just too much to manage for a 10-hour wedding day or when I am hiking for a travel vlog.
I am looking for something truly compact that can actually handle the FX30 without the motors screaming. The FX30 is a bit of a "chonky" camera compared to the standard alpha series, so I am worried about the physical clearance when trying to balance it, especially on the roll axis. I want to make sure I do not spend money on something that is going to be a nightmare to calibrate every time I swap a lens.
Here is my typical setup:
I have been looking closely at the DJI RS3 Mini because it seems like the obvious choice for portability, but I have heard mixed things about the clearance for the FX30 wider body. I have also looked at the Zhiyun Crane M3S, but I am worried the motors might be too weak if I decide to use a slightly heavier lens like the 18-105mm PZ later on.
Has anyone here used the FX30 with a compact gimbal setup? I really want to avoid going back to a full-sized RS3 or RS4 if I can help it. I need something that fits in a standard backpack and doesn't require a whole workout routine to carry all day.
Which compact gimbal have you found works best for the Sony FX30 while keeping the footprint small?
Yo, I feel your pain on the heavy gear front. Weddings are a marathon and hiking with a full rig is just brutal. I went through this same search for my FX30 recently. Honestly, if you're looking for the best bang for your buck without sacrificing motor power, the DJI RS 3 Mini 3-Axis Stabilizer is the way to go. I've seen it go on sale quite often lately, which makes it a total steal for what you get. It handles the FX30 and that Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary combo like a champ. The clearance is tight, ngl, but it works if you slide the baseplate all the way. Tbh I wouldnt bother with the Zhiyun Crane M3S 3-Axis Gimbal if you plan on getting heavier glass later. If you really want to save cash, look for a used Zhiyun Weebill S Compact Gimbal. Its older but super compact with strong motors... definitely worth checking the used market to save some dough.
I have spent way too much time looking at motor torque charts for the FX30 lately, and honestly, the clearance issue is real. While the RS3 Mini is the go-to for many, the physical layout on the roll axis is super tight when balancing a wider body like the FX30, especially if you keep a cage on it. I would actually check out the FeiyuTech SCORP-C 3-Axis Handheld Gimbal Stabilizer. It has a unique integrated handle that makes those low-angle tracking shots a breeze without needing extra hardware. It handles the weight of the Sigma 18-50mm easily and provides plenty of tilt axis clearance for a mic. If you want something that fits better in a pack, look at the Moza AirCross 3 Professional Kit 3-Axis Gimbal. It is basically a transformer; you can fold it into a few different configurations which is huge for travel. It has a 3.2kg payload capacity, so it wont even flinch at the FX30 or that 18-105mm PZ lens you are eyeing. Both of these give you way more room to breathe than the ultra-compact minis.

Saved some cash by grabbing the FeiyuTech SCORP Mini 2 Handheld Gimbal used. Pro tip: balance it with the flip-out screen open so the motors dont overwork during long wedding days.
