Hey everyone! I recently made the jump to the Sony a6700, and I’m absolutely loving the AI autofocus and the 4K quality so far. However, I’m struggling to find the perfect gimbal to pair with it. Since the a6700 is such a great compact powerhouse, I really want to keep my entire setup as portable as possible for travel and street videography. I don't want to carry a massive rig that defeats the purpose of having a smaller APS-C body.
I usually run either the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 or the Sony 10-20mm PZ. The weight isn't extreme, but I want something stable enough to handle those lenses without the motors straining. I’ve been looking closely at the DJI RS 3 Mini because of the native vertical shooting, but I've also seen the Zhiyun Crane M3S mentioned for being incredibly tiny. My main concern is the clearance—the a6700 has a slightly deeper grip than the previous a6000 series, and I want to make sure it doesn't hit the back motor when tilting.
Does anyone have hands-on experience with this specific camera and a compact stabilizer? I’m looking for something that balances quickly and ideally supports Bluetooth shutter control so I can ditch the extra cables. What compact gimbal would you recommend that balances well with the a6700 and a standard zoom lens?
Yo! Saw this earlier and wanted to jump in cuz I spent weeks obsessing over this same setup. Honestly, while everyone points to the DJI RS 3 Mini—and it is awesome for native vertical video—I’d suggest looking at the Feiyu SCORP-Mini 2 if you want the best value. It’s super compact and the built-in AI tracking is lowkey a game changer for street stuff when you're solo. In my experience, the clearance for the a6700 grip is actually better on the Scorp than some other tiny gimbals I've tried. It handles my Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary without the motors getting all jittery, which was basically my biggest fear. Plus, it’s usually a bit cheaper than the DJI, which is great if ur being cost-conscious. I'm still figuring out some of the pro moves, but it balances fast. Just make sure you calibrate it with the lens zoomed out... it makes a huge difference!! gl!
So I actually had a pretty rough time finding a setup that didnt feel like it was gonna snap under the weight of the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary for Sony E lens. I first tried an older stabilizer but the a6700 grip is literally too deep... like it kept hitting the tilt motor whenever I went to low angle mode. Super annoying tbh. Unfortunately, even some of the 'pro' compact ones struggle with the clearance if you use a cage. Anyway, here is what I recommend for that specific setup: - Feiyu SCORP-Mini 2 - This thing is realy great for the a6700 cuz the integrated AI tracker means you dont need extra cables for tracking, plus the motor offset handles the deeper grip better than most. - Zhiyun Crane M3S - As others mentioned, it is tiny, but wait no... you gotta be careful with the balance if you use the Sigma at 50mm because it extends. It supports Bluetooth shutter which is a lifesaver. Basically, the lesson I learned is to look for gimbals with an angled rear motor. It definately saves your footage from jitter. gl!
sooo i totally get the struggle... when I first moved to the Sony a6700, I was highkey worried about that deeper grip hitting the back motors. In my experience, I would suggest the DJI RS 3 Mini. I've tried many setups over the years and this is really the sweet spot for a6700 users who want to stay light. Basically, here is why it works:
* It has plenty of clearance for the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary and the Sony PZ lenses
* Bluetooth shutter control is a total game changer for street videography
* The native vertical shooting is super smooth and stable I was kinda cautious about the Zhiyun Crane M3S cuz it felt a bit too small for a zoom lens, but the RS 3 Mini feels way more reliable. Just be careful with ur calibration... I once strained a motor by not balancing properly... lesson learned!! anyway, it's definitely the safest bet for ur setup. gl!
