I just upgraded to the Sony a6700 for travel vlogging and really need a compact gimbal to match. I'm mostly shooting with small primes or the Sigma 18-50mm.

I've been eyeing the DJI RS 3 Mini and the Zhiyun Crane M3S. Which one offers better balance and native camera control for this setup?

Just catching up on this thread! I went through this last year and was so worried about breaking my gear lol.

Re: "Bump - same question here"

  • I spent way too much time testing my Sony a6700 on different rigs recently. I learned pretty fast that the payload limit on the box is kinda misleading for lenses like the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary. Heres what I ran into:
  • One brand I tried had amazing software but the physical locks felt like cheap plastic.
  • The other had beefy motors but the bluetooth connection was super flaky.
  • Balancing that zoom lens at 18mm vs 50mm is a nightmare on motors with low torque. Tbh, I struggled for a week with a gimbal that was rated for my weight but clearly couldnt handle the physics of a lens that extends. I finally swapped to my current setup which has a bit more motor overhead. It adds maybe 100g to my bag, but it doesnt vibrate when I zoom in, which is basically all that matters when youre run-and-gunning. Just make sure whatever you pick has high enough torque specs to handle that weight shift... otherwise youll be re-balancing every 5 minutes lol.

Catching up on this today and honestly both are solid choices, but I need a bit more data before saying which is the better value for your specific wallet. Since the Sony a6700 is super light but that Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary extends when you zoom, are you planning to re-balance every time you change focal lengths, or do you need a motor with enough torque to handle the weight shift? Also, are you stripping the camera down or adding stuff like a cage or an external mic? Even an extra 100g can push a smaller gimbal to its limits, and I dont want you wasting money on something that stutters under load. Basically just trying to see how much headroom you actually need vs what you want to spend...

> Which one offers better balance and native camera control for this setup? Totally agree! High torque ensures smooth pans and my current setups wireless control is a lifesaver cuz messy cables literally ruin the vibe and it was super affordable for the value!!
