Hey everyone! I recently upgraded to the Sony a6700, and I’m absolutely loving the autofocus and video features so far. I primarily use it with the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8, so it's a pretty lightweight setup, but I really need a compact gimbal for my upcoming travel trip. I’ve been looking at the DJI RS 3 Mini and the Zhiyun Crane M3S, but I'm worried about motor clearance with the a6700's flip-out screen. I want something that fits easily in a hiking pack but doesn't feel flimsy. Has anyone tried these specific combos, or is there a better low-profile option I’m missing? What would you recommend for the best balance of portability and stability for this setup?

Seconding the recommendation above! If ur looking to save some cash, check these out: 1. Feiyu SCORP-Mini 2 3-Axis Handheld Gimbal (~$260) - Seriously AMAZING clearance for that flip-out screen and super light!
2. Hohem iSteady MT2 Kit Camera Gimbal (~$200) - Budget king!! I think the MT2 is basically the best value, but the Feiyu feels way less flimsy for hiking trips. gl!

sooo i was just looking into this too since i'm kinda in the same boat. honestly, that flip-out screen clearance is the biggest hurdle for the a6700... it can be a total pain on some tiny gimbals. here is the breakdown:
- DJI RS 3 Mini 3-Axis Gimbal Stabilizer: costs about $369. it has longer arms which basically solves the screen hitting the motor. it feels solid and isnt flimsy at all.
- Zhiyun Crane M3S 3-Axis Handheld Gimbal: usually around $299. super light for hiking, but clearance is tight. idk if it would work well if you add a cage or bulky cables later. tbh, for the extra $70, i think the dji is way more practical. it handles that Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary Lens for Sony E setup without breaking a sweat and basically works for everything... good luck!

> I’m worried about motor clearance with the a6700's flip-out screen. Coming back to this, I'm still learning the ropes with the a6700 myself but I've been reading a lot about the actual motor torque and physical limits on these smaller setups. It seems like a realy common issue that people run into with that specific screen design. Before you decide, I had a couple quick questions to help narrow it down:

  • How comfortable are you with DIY tuning and manually messing with the motor strength settings in an app to compensate for a slightly off-center balance?
  • Are you looking for something that has a great self-service community for fixes and mods, or would you rather have a pro warranty where you just ship it back if it starts acting wierd after a long hike? I ask because some of the more compact options can be pretty fiddly. I've seen some people basically hack their mounting plates with a small riser to get more clearance for that screen, but it takes some patience to get it balanced right without stressing the motors too much. Tbh, it feels like a bit of a trade-off between portability and how much technical work you want to put into the setup yourself.

Yep, this is the way

For your situation, I suggest that smaller DJI gimbal. Honestly, i was worried about the screen too but it basically fits PERFECTLY and feels super safe. You wont regret it!

So I'm actually just starting to look into this stuff myself, but I've been doing some research on how different brands handle the a6700. It's pretty confusing tbh! Before you pull the trigger, are you planning on using a camera cage or any extra gear like a shotgun mic on ur setup? I ask because that basically changes the whole clearance situation for the screen. Quick tip: look into the Moza AirCross S 3-Axis Gimbal. It’s a "sleeper" alternative to the big names that's great for travel and usually cheaper. Also, always balance ur gimbal with the screen flipped out if that’s how you plan to shoot!
