I just picked up a Sony FX30 for my video work and I’m looking to build out a solid rig. I’m mainly doing run-and-gun shoots, so I need a cage that provides good protection and plenty of mounting points for a monitor and a side handle. My biggest concern is finding something that is fully compatible with the Sony XLR top handle without needing weird adapters. I've been looking at the Tilta and SmallRig options, but I'm worried about them blocking the record buttons or restricting the flip-out screen's movement. Does anyone have a setup they absolutely love? I'd prefer something lightweight that doesn't add too much bulk. Which cage offers the best balance of features and ergonomics for the FX30?
tbh, I've tried both the Tilta Full Camera Cage for Sony FX3/FX30 V2 and the SmallRig Full Cage for Sony FX3 / FX30 4183. Tilta is cool but feels bulky. Honestly, SmallRig is the clear winner cuz it’s *so* lightweight and doesn’t block the screen. Most importantly, it fits the XLR handle perfectly without adapters. Its just more reliable for pro work. Seriously, go SmallRig! 👍
Soo, basically cages are like the skeleton for your rig... they protect the body but the real value is how they let you mount stuff without stressing the camera itself. I went through this last year when I got my FX30 and was highkey worried about the XLR handle too. I was on a budget, so I actually went with the SmallRig Half Cage for Sony FX3 / FX30 3278 instead of the full version. It was way cheaper and kept the rig super lightweight, which is huge when you're shooting all day. It fits the handle perfectly and doesn't block the screen at all, which was my biggest fear! Quick tip: Look for a cage with a built-in Arca-Swiss plate on the bottom. It saves so much money on extra plates when you're switching to a tripod or gimbal!! gl!
Saw this earlier but just now responding... if you are looking for absolute reliability and precise tolerances, you should check out the 8Sinn Cage for Sony FX3 / FX30. I spent way too much time looking at the technical specs for these recently. Most cages use a multi-piece design, but the 8Sinn is machined from a single block of 6061 aluminum. This basically means fewer screws that can rattle loose during a shoot. It weighs about 205 grams, so it is not adding much bulk to your run-and-gun setup. Also, if you are worried about the XLR handle compatibility, the Kondor Blue Sony FX3/FX30 Cage is specifically engineered to leave the top hot shoe area completely clear. It uses a modular top plate that you can just leave off if you want to use the Sony handle, so there is zero chance of it blocking the pins or the electronic connection. Plus, their mounting points are reinforced with steel inserts, which is a huge plus for longevity if you are constantly swapping monitors and side handles. Ngl, its a bit pricier than SmallRig, but the build quality and the data on its stress-testing are on another level.
Seconding the recommendation above! Honestly, I've been shooting for years but I'm still kinda new to this specific camera setup. I just went with a basic kit from SmallRig and it's basically been perfect. No issues with the XLR handle at all, which was my biggest worry!! It feels so lightweight for run-and-gun stuff and doesn't block the screen movement. Im really happy with it so far, you seriously cant go wrong with their stuff tbh
