Hi everyone! I recently upgraded to the Sony a6700 for my travel vlogs and some light documentary work. While the 4K video quality is absolutely stunning, I’ve quickly realized that the built-in microphones just don't cut it, especially when there’s any wind or background noise. I’m looking for suggestions on the best microphone to pair with this specific body.
Since the a6700 is relatively compact, I really want a setup that stays portable and doesn't feel too top-heavy on a small gimbal or handheld. I’ve been researching the Sony ECM-B10 because it uses the digital Multi Interface (MI) shoe—which seems awesome for keeping the setup cable-free—but I’m also considering a more traditional shotgun like the Rode VideoMic NTG or even a wireless DJI Mic 2 setup for interviews.
I’m a bit confused about whether the digital connection on the Sony-brand mics offers a significant jump in quality over the standard 3.5mm jack for this specific camera's preamps. My budget is around $250-$300. For those of you using the a6700, what microphone has given you the best balance of audio clarity and ease of use?
Oh man, I totally feel u on the cable struggle. I spent years messing with tangled 3.5mm wires on my older rigs until I finally swapped to the digital MI shoe setups. Seriously, it’s life-changing for travel vlogging. For your a6700, honestly, the digital connection actually makes a HUGE difference. It bypasses the camera's internal analog preamps, so u get a much cleaner signal with way less floor noise. Since u want compact and cable-free, here’s what I recommend: * Sony ECM-B10 Digital Shotgun Microphone - This is basically the perfect match. It's super tiny, fits your budget perfectly at around $250, and the noise suppression is legit.
* Sony ECM-M1 Shotgun Microphone - If u can find a deal, this one has 8 different pickup patterns which is awesome for documentary stuff. I've tried many setups and lowkey, keeping it simple is always better. The Rode VideoMic NTG is great, but that cable is just one more thing to snag on your gimbal. Stick with the MI shoe and youll be stoked with how easy it is to just slide it on and go. GL!
Ok so +1 to what was said earlier. The a6700 preamps were honestly not as good as expected and still have some hiss over 3.5mm. I actually had issues with cable noise on small gimbals. Tbh, check out the Sony ECM-W3 Wireless Microphone System. It uses the digital MI shoe to bypass the camera's analog converters entirely. Basically the cleanest signal you can get for vlogging. gl!
Similar situation here! I went through this last year. Over the years, I've tried many 3.5mm setups on my Sony bodies and always struggled with that low-level hiss during quiet scenes... maybe it was just my luck? idk. I finally moved to a setup that uses the top shoe instead. Honestly, it was a game changer for my budget. My current setup just works way better on a gimbal. Ever tried balancing with cables tho?
