What are the best gimbal options for the Sony FX30?

I am honestly so fed up with my current gimbal situation and I am starting to panic because I have a huge wedding shoot coming up next weekend in Seattle and my setup is a total mess. I bought the Sony FX30 a few months ago and I love the camera but getting it to play nice with a stabilizer has been a complete nightmare. I initially went with the DJI RS3 Mini because everyone online said it was the perfect lightweight combo but my logic was clearly flawed because as soon as I put my 18-105mm G lens on there it just wont balance properly. The motors are constantly vibrating and making this high-pitched whining sound that is driving me crazy and I am terrified it is gonna fail mid-ceremony. I tried adding some counterweights but then the whole thing gets so heavy it defeats the purpose of having a mini gimbal anyway.

So then I was thinking maybe I should just return it and get the standard RS3 or maybe even the RS3 Pro but then I look at the price tag and my bank account just cries. My budget is capped at around $550 maybe $600 if I stretch it but I really need something that can actually handle the FX30 with a small cage and a decent lens without the motors giving up on life. I looked at the Zhiyun Weebill 3S too because the wrist rest seems like a lifesaver for long days but I've heard such mixed things about their firmware and I really cant afford to have it glitch out on me while the bride is walking down the aisle.

  • DJI RS3 (maybe too expensive?)
  • Zhiyun Weebill 3S (is the software actually okay?)
  • Used RS2 (is it too old for the FX30 features?)

Is anyone else using an FX30 for professional work and what are you actually using that doesnt feel like a toy? I feel like I am overthinking every single spec at this point because I am so stressed about the timeline. Should I be looking at older models or is that just asking for more trouble? I just need something reliable that isnt going to break my arm or my spirit before this shoot next week...

Honestly, the RS3 Mini is a beast for small primes, but that Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS is just too long for it to handle comfortably, especially with a cage added. That high-pitched whining sound you're hearing is definitely the roll or tilt motor straining because the center of gravity is too far forward. For a wedding next weekend, you need something with higher motor torque. I would look at the DJI RS 3 3-Axis Gimbal Stabilizer. It fits your $550 budget perfectly and handles a 3kg (6.6 lbs) payload. The arms are significantly longer than the Mini, which gives you the physical clearance needed for the FX30 and that specific G lens. I've used this exact combo with a cage and it is rock solid. The automated axis locks are a literal lifesaver when you're moving fast between the ceremony and reception. If you're worried about the weight, the Zhiyun Weebill 3S Handheld Gimbal Stabilizer is a decent alternative. The built-in wrist rest actually does help with fatigue, and their firmware is much more stable than the older 2 series, tho DJI still has the edge on software reliability. A used DJI RS 2 Pro Combo is also an option since it has a 4.5kg payload, but honestly, it is probably heavier than you want to carry for a 10-hour day. Stick with the standard RS3... it is the most logical balance of price and performance for your kit. Just make sure to run the auto-tune after you balance it.

Regarding what #1 said about the RS3 Mini, the DJI RS 3 Gimbal Stabilizer is a more solid choice. It is within budget and the motors are much stronger for that long lens. Quick tip for that FX30 setup: use the SmallRig Extended Quick Release Plate to help with the balance offset. It makes the whole thing way more stable and you wont have to worry about the motors vibrating during the vows.

Lol I was literally about to post the same thing. Glad someone else brought it up.
