I'm looking to add a versatile zoom lens to my Sony APS-C mirrorless camera kit and have narrowed it down to two options:

  1. Sony E 16-55mm f/2.8 G
  2. Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD

Both lenses offer a fast f/2.8 aperture throughout the zoom range and cover a very useful focal length range from wide-angle to short telephoto. The Sony has a bit wider 16mm vs 17mm on the wide end, while the Tamron extends further to 70mm vs 55mm.

The Sony is part of their higher-end G series and has a robust metal build. The Tamron includes vibration compensation (VC) which the Sony lacks.

There is a significant price difference, with the Sony costing nearly twice as much as the Tamron.

For those who have used either or both of these lenses, what has your experience been in terms of:

  • Optical quality
  • Autofocus speed and accuracy
  • Build quality and handling
  • Value for the price

Which one would you recommend and why? I shoot a mix of landscapes, travel, and portraits if that helps.

Thanks in advance for your insights!
