I'm having a hard time deciding between these two lenses for my Sony A6600. They are both affordable f/2.8 zoom lenses that seem well-reviewed, but I'm not sure which one would suit my needs better for everyday photography like landscapes, street, and some portraits. The Sigma is lighter and more compact, plus it's cheaper. But the Tamron has a longer zoom range on the tele end which could be useful. However, I've read the Sigma has better image quality wide open. Any thoughts on how they compare? Or recommendations on which lens to go for? I'm really stuck between these two options right now. Thanks!
To add to the point above: i’ve been shooting with the a6000 series since the dawn of time basically! i actually owned that tamron for a year and while it was amazing for the reach, it felt like a total brick after four hours of hiking. ngl, i think i read somewhere that the Sony E 16-55mm f/2.8 G is actually way sharper than both of these, even if it costs a fortune. i dont have it yet but my buddy swears by it... iirc he said the colors and contrast are just way more crisp if that makes sense? i’m kinda leaning towards telling you to skip the big mid-range zooms entirely and maybe just grab a fast prime like the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary for that low light magic. honestly, having a tiny setup makes you want to shoot way more often than lugging a heavy lens around. i love the zoom convenience but primes just have that special look. just my two cents!
I agonized over this same decision a while back for my a6600. Ultimately I went with the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 because of the longer zoom range and vibration compensation (VC). The image quality is excellent and having that extra reach to 70mm has come in very handy for environmental portraits and some closer wildlife shots. However, the Sigma is certainly more compact and portable if sizing is a major factor for you. Just keep in mind you'll be losing that long end zoom capability.
Choose tamron 17-70, trust me, i am enjoying this lens for a long time.
Lots of good points here! I have the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 Contemporary and absolutely love it on my Sony fx30. The compact size, build quality and image quality are all excellent in my experience. However, if I had to do it over again, I would seriously consider stretching my budget for the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8. That extra reach to 70mm is very useful and a constant f/2.8 aperture through the whole zoom range is great. The VC is also a nice bonus. For me the Sigma wins out a bit on pure image quality and compact size. But the Tamron's longer zoom range and VC make it a bit more versatile as an all-purpose lens. You can't go wrong with either choice though! Test them out if possible.
Tamron 17-70mm has more range.
Both are great lenses, I choose Sigma because it is much cheaper.
