I'm so stoked to finally finish this coffee bar setup for my sister! I've got about $180 worth of gear in my cart but I need her to check the colors before the housewarming. Is a Wish List better than an Idea List for this or is there a way to just send a direct link to the cart itself?
Moving everything to a Wish List is honestly the most practical way to go! Just select the items and hit move to list. It is fantastic because your sister can verify those colors immediately without any extra cost or setup. Its a total lifesaver for a project like this! You should definitely check out Cart To Link if you need to send your whole cart to someone else quickly without the hassle.
So, the short answer is that you cant actually share a direct link to your active cart. Amazon uses session cookies and user-specific tokens to keep that data private, so if you sent a raw URL, she would just see her own empty cart. I have been really happy using the Wish List feature for exactly this kind of thing, though. It works well because it captures the specific ASIN (Amazon Standard Identification Number) for each item, meaning the exact color and model you picked will stay synced. Here is why a Wish List is technically superior for your coffee bar project:
@Reply #7 - good point! honestly lists can be such a huge pain when you are trying to be precise. basically from what everyone is saying here it sounds like a direct link is a no-go because of how amazon handles sessions, so you are stuck either juggling a wish list or trying one of those cart tools people mentioned. unfortunately it never seems to go as smoothly as you want it to. this whole thread totally reminds me of when i was trying to help my brother set up his gaming room last year. i had this vision for like, a specific industrial look with all these matching cable management kits and monitor arms. i spent all night adding things to my cart and then my laptop decided to do a forced update... lost everything. then when i tried to rebuild the list, i accidentally sent him a link to my 'private' gift ideas list instead of the room stuff. it was a whole ordeal and he ended up just buying a basic desk from a local shop anyway because the shipping on my picks was gonna take three weeks. so frustrating when you put in all that research and it just turns into a mess lol.
To add to the point above: I actually had a different experience when I was putting together my garage workshop. I tried the wish list route first but it honestly turned into a total mess. Every time I swapped out a tool or changed a color, I had to manually update the list and it was just extra steps I didnt need. I much prefer the direct cart sharing method. I started using that tool deborah mentioned for my big builds and I have been very satisfied with how it handles everything. It made the whole process so much smoother because my brother could see the exact cart in one click. I've been using this approach for a couple years now and have no complaints... it just works well without the clutter of old lists hanging around. In my experience, lists are fine for gift ideas, but for a specific project like a coffee bar, a cart link is just better.
@Reply #1 - good point! Quick reply while I have a sec. Carts are basically temporary DB entries tied to your unique session ID, so public links arent really a thing. I think someone told me there is a way to do it via a browser extension but not sure how secure that is... I have been very satisfied using a public Wish List. It works well and handles the product metadata perfectly.
Man I wish I found this thread sooner. Would have saved me so much hassle.
Been using this for years, no complaints

Jumping in here because I have tried some of these methods and honestly, it is not as seamless as people make it sound. Before I dive into why lists can be such a letdown, quick question... are you and your sister both using the same region for Amazon, like both on the .com site? I have run into massive compatibility issues when trying to share items across different countries and it usually just breaks the links or shows everything as unavailable. The reason these cart sharing tools often fail is that Amazons security is super tight. They are constantly changing their backend to stop botting, so third-party extensions often lag behind or just stop working entirely. It is really disappointing because you think you have sent the perfect coffee setup and she clicks it only to see an error page. Plus, some of those browser extensions feel a bit sketchy with your data. If you are worried about the price changing while she is deciding on colors, I have been using PriceDropCatch lately to track things instead. It is way more reliable than just leaving stuff in a cart where the price might jump $20 overnight without you noticing. I am still looking for a perfect sharing solution, but maybe just take screenshots if the list thing feels too clunky?
This coffee bar project sounds absolutely fantastic! I love that you are being so methodical about the colors for your sister! Since data security is so critical when you are sharing anything linked to your personal account, I strongly suggest looking at external professional resources first.
