Which external microphone works best with the Sony ZV-1?

I just bought a Sony ZV-1 for my new cooking channel because everyone said it was the best for beginners but honestly I am so overwhelmed right now. The sound in my tiny kitchen here in Brooklyn is just... its bad. Everything echoes and you can hear the fridge humming in the back and my voice sounds like I'm underwater. I tried looking at microphones on Amazon and it's like a different language. Some have fuzzy covers and some are just tiny clips and I have no idea what actually fits on top of the camera. I saw this thing called a Rode VideoMicro but then I saw a VideoMic GO and a VideoMic Pro and I just started crying a little bit because the prices range from $50 to like $300 and I only have about $100 left in my budget after buying the camera. My first big shoot is next Thursday and I am panicking.

Do I need a special cord to make it work or does it just slide into that little slot on top? And will it actually block out the fridge noise? I just want my voice to sound clear without spending a fortune or having to learn how to be a sound engineer. My logic was that a bigger mic is better but then I saw some tiny ones that cost way more so now I'm just stuck. Which one should I get that just works immediately without any fancy settings?

Saw your post this morning and wanted to weigh in. I would suggest being very careful with your expectations; a mic wont magically delete a loud fridge, but it will prioritize your voice over the background noise. For a $100 budget, you might want to consider these two structured options:

  • Rode VideoMicro Compact On-Camera Microphone
  • This is a solid entry-level choice. It is small, requires no batteries, and includes a windshield for airflow issues. It is basic but reliable.
  • Rode VideoMic GO II Lightweight Directional Microphone
  • I recommend this if you can stretch the budget slightly. It is more directional, which should help isolate your voice from the kitchen echoes better than the VideoMicro. Make sure you plug the cable into the red mic port on the side of the ZV-1. It slides into the shoe on top, but the cord is what actually sends the sound. Dont forget to check your audio levels in the camera menu so you dont clip.
