Ugh so I finally caved and got the Sony ZV-1 for my trip to Tokyo next month but honestly I am so frustrated because every video I watch says I need like five hundred more things just to make it usable. Like the battery life is already driving me crazy just testing it in my living room here in Seattle and I only have about 220 bucks left in my budget for accessories before I leave in three weeks. I am totally torn between a few different setups and I cant decide what is actually essential for filming street food and walking around without carrying a massive bag.
First I was looking at the official Sony GP-VPT2BT shooting grip because everyone says it makes the camera easier to hold but its like 140 dollars which feels like a total scam for a plastic tripod?? But then my logic was if I dont get that maybe I should get the Ulanzi WL-1 wide angle lens instead because the crop factor when you turn on stabilization is just insane and my face takes up the whole screen. But if I get the lens I probably cant afford the grip. Then there is the whole audio situation... I heard the built in mic is okay with the little deadcat thing it comes with but I was looking at the Rode VideoMicro II which is way better for noisy streets but then the camera gets even bulkier.
So its basically like do I get the official grip and some extra batteries or do I go with a cheap SmallRig cage and the wide angle lens and just hope I dont drop the thing? I keep going back and forth because I want the footage to look wide but I also dont want a shaky mess or dead batteries halfway through the day. Is the wide angle lens actually worth the extra weight or should I just stick to the grip? I am leaning towards the lens and a cheap handle but I dont know if the quality is gonna be crap compared to the official Sony stuff. I just need to know what you guys actually use every day because I am losing my mind looking at Amazon carts...
I am very satisfied with my current setup and it works well without breaking the bank. Forget the Sony grip. Honestly, the SmallRig Cage for Sony ZV-1 2931 paired with a cheap handle is way better. Definitely prioritize the Newmowa NP-BX1 Replacement Battery 3-Pack with Charger since you will need the power. This way you can still afford that Ulanzi WL-1 Wide Angle Lens for your Tokyo trip.
In my experience, the Manfrotto PIXI Mini Tripod supports up to 1kg, making it far more stable than the Sony grip. It's a professional, cost-effective choice for filming street food in Tokyo.
